Dubuque... It's the smaller city but appears to have much going on for it economically and culturally. 1.5 hours or less from Madison, Iowa City, and the Quad Cities while just over 3 hours from Chicago.
Key West, FL or Pearl City, HI?
Pearl City, HI. Even though Key West is connected to the rest of the U.S. by road, it's way too distant from other cities by driving distance (3.5+ hrs from Miami), whereas Pearl City is only 30 mins from Honolulu. Plus Pearl City is larger & has the American chain stores/amenities like Key West.
Alexandria, LA or Fayetteville, AR?

I'm a contrarian here: I'd pick Boston over disgustingly sunny San Diego because it has winter. I fully agree with a sentiment I once saw on a T-shirt: "Those who cannot handle winter don't deserve summer."
However: I'd mandate that sunset in New England in the winter take place at about the same time as it does in San Diego. (I do wrestle with depression from time to time, and I find that the long darknesses do affect my mood.)
Ocean City, N.J., or Ocean City, Md.?
(Edited to add: I see I was composing my answer at about the same time as ASJackson814. You now have two pairs to choose from.)
