Yes - Houston, Dallas, hell, I'm sure even Phoenix has a Saks Fifth Avenue.

Here's how it works - stores like Saks Fifth Avenue have buyers that represent each market. These buyers go to showrooms, fashion week (New York, Paris, Milan) and select things to stock in each region.

To put it bluntly; Atlanta and Houston aren't fashionable cities, so the buyers from Saks Fifth Avenue Houston or Atlanta go into designer showrooms in New York and stock the cheapest most conservative things they know will sell in Atlanta. The buyers for New York are in New York, Milan and Paris Fashion week selecting the finest for New York.

Instead of a $12,000 Gucci Mongolian-fur lined leather bomber jacket they'll order for the New York City market, they'll stock some ghetto incredibly tacky low-end Gucci monogrammed windbreaker in cities like Houston. Instead of a high end Versace dress for women, they'll sock a much conservative much cheaper alternative. Instead of the $8,000 Burberry Prorsum wool trench, they'll order for the New York City market, they'll stock a low-rent lower-end Burberry and an ugly t-shirt so buyers in these low-rent markets can flash their Saks Fifth Avenue shopping bags with some cheap $100 ugly t-shirt and think they're "fashionable". Those aspirational buyers will feel all good and walk around like "Look at me, I'm shopping at Saks!"

Why? Because the fashionable high-end stuff will sell in a sophisticated market like New York, but it will not sell in aspirational market like Houston.

There is a reason Saks Fifth Avenue in Houston/Atlanta carry don't carry Gareth Pugh? No. Lanvin? No. Alaia? No. Rick Owens? No. Dior Homme? No. Balenciaga? No. Balmain? No. They only stock these items in the New York City locations and Beverly Hills.

Call your Saks in Atlanta/Houston and ask, "Do you carry Gareth Pugh"? They'll scratch their heads in bewilderment because they won't even know what it is.

Why, you ask? Those brands are far too upmarket for a downmarket city like Houston, while people in New York have the funds, the taste and the fashion-forwardness to splurge on these desinger purchases. Now you know why all the worldwide high end stores have flagships and showrooms in New York. Have you ever been into the four-story Gucci in New York City? Compare it with that tiny dingy location Houston Galleria Location which stocks the most laughable downmarket Gucci crap. There are five or six Prada Boutiques on the island of Manhattan. Not even one in the entire Houston. The New York market is by far the most profitable market when it comes to luxury and fashion merchandise.

For example, Giorgio Armani 5th Avenue New York:

Compare that to that dingy tiny hovel Giorgio Armani Houston Galleria. Even the designer stores in Los Angeles are lacking, unappealing and are nowhere as good as the ones in NY.

Not to mention New York City has boutiques that are exclusive to the United States - Jean Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford, Martin Margiela, Givenchy, Yohji Yamamoto, Kiton, Comme Des Garcons, Dior Homme (only one other in Beverly Hills), Zac Posen, etc etc. You will only find those in Paris, London and Milan.

New York is the mecca.
I think what people are bent out of shape over isnt that people think New York isnt the most fashionable or that New York doesnt have the best shopping. Its that alot of posters are trying to downplay what cities like Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta do have.

As for saying Atlanta isnt fashionable, I beg to differ.

Again I post the most fashionable cities in the US:

1) New York
2) Los Angeles
3) Las Vegas
4) Miami
5) Dallas
6) Atlanta

No one on here is saying that Atlanta or Dallas is more fashionable than New York, but they definately are fashionable.

After all how do someone put 3 cities in the Southern states in the top 6 most fashionable cities in the US??????? They could have put in Boston, Philly, DC, Chicago, or another city that isnt Southern in there! After all, people in Dallas only wear cowboy atire and Sombreros, and people in Atlanta only wear FUBU on overalls with no shoes right?

Maybe because they sell food, electronics, drinks, toys, and more outside of clothes.....???

Its not that serious in atlanta. Atlantans werent even on gucci and designer clothes like new york was/is either. The south stepped its game up, like i said. But you can still tell new yorkers apart. Im not saying everyone is well dressed. But the sheer amount that are is impressive. In manhattan u have the upscale, hipster etc. In the bronx and brooklyn you have the urban fashion, that was created there

Dressing is apart of the fabric of the city. I saw an old mexican lady, who looked to be in her forties, with a northface and airmax 95s on.
shoes and clothes don't come out 2 and 3 years and then every other city gets it.. There are parts of NYC that are fashionable and parts that aren't.. I can only tell a new Yorker by there swag or there accent not by the way they dress. There are so many fashionAble across America.

Will just have to agree to disagee. From personal experience, out of state, people could tell i was from new york. Without opening my mouth or knowing my "swag"

Did you have a Yankees cap or some other NYC clothing on? Unless someone is wearing something with NYC on it, I can't spot a New Yorker from the way they dress and neither does anyone I know. All the NYer's I've met in CA don't stand out in the way they dress at all. It could be that people on the west coast just don't care whether or not someone is from NY either .

Just replace hicks with guidos and now you have Long Island. Seriously, there are people with no fashion sense in every part of the country, they just come in different forms. You stereotype the South as full of hicks, well we can stereotype yall right back and say that there's nothing but guidos.

I totally agree, sav858.

People in the South just don't care either.

I'm not buying any of this.

This thread has gone beyond ridiculous at this point.

All of you hardcore NY'ers may be buying this crap, but I'm afraid you're alone on this one.

And no, you don't have to spend thousands to look fashionable. There is a Topman and a Topshop in New York. They only have that in London. There are also lots of other cheap fashionable stores all over the city that they don't have in other cities like Oak NYC or Scoop, Marc by Marc Jacobs is pretty cheap. Nobody does cheap and fashionable like New York, London, etc.

Cheap "fashion" in most American cities is JCPenny and Sears.

If you think the south doesnt hold its own click the link to these malls in the south..... You act like no one knows what marc jacobs or dior is I was a fashio major I know what lables are
