Rain looks like it's turning to a mix here.

Edit: now it is just snow

It looks like as is often typical...I-84 is the snow/rain line. As of the 10 am obs, most locations north and west (give or take a few miles) are reporting some wet snow...while places to the east and south are reporting rain:

Heavy precip rates cooled the entire column. Its above freezing at 5000' but below freezing at 8000'. So the harder the precip falls the more chance of snow for higher elevations especially. Not enough time to melt because of the intensity its falling through the atmosphere above your location.

Moderate snow in Windsor Locks with 1/2 mile visibility and a temp of 33F.

2 Lows 1003mb off Maryland Coast and Near Pittsburgh, they haven't merged yet but cold air from the north is slowly moving south now

Since I submitted that post two hours ago it has rained lightly, snowed heavily, snowed lightly, sleeted lightly, rained heavily and mixed lightly. Fun morning

Looks like NWS Upton just updated their discussion:

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
1055 AM EST Sun Jan 28 2024

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Evaporative cooling in the mid levels did allow for a mix or
changeover to snow across portions of the interior, mainly
north of I-84, especially the higher elevations.
Temperatures
across this area were generally in the mid and upper 30s. Video
cams support wet roads and a light coating on grassy areas. Did
receive a report of 0.5" NW of Montgomery, NY.

Mid level dry slot has punched in across the western half the
area and will do so to the east in the next hour. The loss of
saturation in the snow growth region (-10 to -20C) and
temperatures above freezing will result in mainly light rain
and drizzle during the afternoon hours.
Some locations along
and north of I-84 potentially could see some wet snow mixed in
at times if saturation can occur in the snow growth layer aloft.

A secondary low develops off the NJ coast this morning and
tracks south and east of Long Island into this evening. The low
will become the main surface system this evening into tonight
as it tracks inside the benchmark tonight. Gusty winds are
likely to occur as the pressure gradient increases this
afternoon and evening, especially near the coast. Slightly
colder air will wrap around the low bringing the potential for
some wet snow
to make it down to the NYC metro and Long Island
in any lingering precip late tonight into early Monday morning.

Little or no additional snow accumulation is forecast for
interior areas for the remainder of today.

Liquid equivalent amounts around 1 inch are forecast

Makes total sense.. precip intensity isn't always going to be heavy, as soon as it lets up in the sky it has enough time to melt as rain. Interesting stuff but annoying for January!

I-91 cams seem to show the best south to north rain to snow line if you match them to the 11 am OBS:

At Meriden its 34 F and raining:

At Hartford temps are reported at 33 F. While the road is just wet, if you look to the sides you can just make out some wet snow:

Lots of storms this month and no big snow to show for it. Unbelievable.

No matter what the rain/snow does tonight, it looks like (FINALLY) we should get some dry weather and sunshine this week as we start Feb:
