So does anyone know if they are going to bury this little girl or keep trying to prop her up?

That was the uncle who was interviewed...not the lawyer. More hearsay, yuck.

Don't know if anyone has posted this or if the information has changed, but this article

Jahi McMath, brain-dead teen, released from Children's Hospital Oakland in 'bad shape' - NY Daily News

says that Jahi's body was taken to her mother's home.

"She was taken to her mother’s home about 8 p.m. Sunday, still attached to a ventilator but without the feeding tube the family had fought to have installed.
The girl’s uncle, Omari Sealey, told the Daily News an online fundraising page helped pay for her transportation. More than $50,000 has been raised on the “Go Fund Me” website.

Dolan would not name the facility treating the girl because of safety concerns and the ensuing crush of reporters he said he expected would descend on the center."

So, what? They took her to her mother's home and a facility is treating her at the mother's home? Or they took her to her mother's home and then took her to facility?

If they are raising money for the transportation, but not for the facility, I am going to guess they have her at home.

I understand that most parents probably purchase the insurance to pay funeral expenses. I still find it disgusting. Insurance of any type is always a bet between the policyholder and the insurance company. As a mom, I preferred to save what I would have paid out in premiums and used the funds to provide the best for my children while they were living. A funeral is not for the deceased, it is for the living.

I think the disagreement regarding the appropriateness of purchasing a life insurance policy on one's child probably stems from our individual views of how we perceive death and how we choose to honor the deceased. There is no right or wrong view here. (I am excluding the extreme position adopted by Jahi McMath's family).

After you read the link, I'd appreciate your thoughts about whether members of the treatment team, let alone family members or others, could have made this request. I want to understand the investigation as much as possible. I would assume those investigating would have access to ALL medical records and the Informed, Signed Consent etc. However, I honestly don't know their scope of investigation or any limitations.

Also, more about the hospital in NY is outlined. Presently, they DO NOT have an inpatient unit, if I read that correctly. And they will have to hire a pediatrician to care for this teen.

I'll be interested in your views -
State investigating Oakland hospital after girl declared brain dead

MSR
I'd be very surprised if the CA Dept. of Public Health (CADPH) did NOT investigate this event at the Oakland Children's Hospital. The CADPH is likely the state agency that licenses healthcare facilities in CA, and these agencies routinely investigate reported adverse incidents that occur at their licensed facilities, including wrongful deaths, which the death of this little girl appears to be. Usually the investigations are initiated when a complaint or allegation of wrongdoing is reported to the agency, either by a patient, family member, employee, or anyone witnessing such an event ( usually the agencies have hotline 800 numbers or online forms to report complaints). It's entirely possible that members of this girl's treatment team could have made that complaint. With the events surrounding the death of this girl making the headlines as it has, it's even possible that the complaint could have been generated internally by employees at the CADPH when they heard the report.

The CADPH would be looking mainly for compliance with applicable state and federal laws on the part of the hospital and employees caring for the child- but the reports ( which are public information) will also show the anecdotal information- without the names of specific employees-gathered in the investigation. The identity of the individual(s) filing the complaint are not part of the public information, but are known to the agency, unless the complainant(s) specify that they wish to remain anonymous.

IMO this case should be investigated to determine if the girl's condition was due to negligence on the part of the hospital employees, surgeons, if her care met standards of medical practice. I know we don't know the entire story, but I have a hard time imagining how this child, following a tonsillectomy, was not monitored closely enough post-op and for long enough to see that she was bleeding so profusely, so measures could be taken to help her. Or whether or not she had pre-op lab testing to determine if she had a potential bleeding problem- this is standard with most surgeries. It just seems to me that both the hospital and doctors/surgeons involved in her care bear culpability for her outcome. And I can't understand why it seems the hospital has treated this incident as callously as it appears in the reports- she's brain dead, that's it-goodbye-next--- when one would think they'd handle the case with kid gloves since it's very likely they bear at least part of the blame for her being in that condition. Perhaps there's more to this event that would mitigate the hospital's responsibility, but given this much information, it's all I can conclude as an armchair judge.

That said, all I can do is to keep the girl and her family in my prayers, and reserve judgement for their actions. It's a beloved child they've lost so suddenly, and for no good reason, and they must sooner or later come to terms with their loss. Perhaps they need to take these actions to convince themselves in time that they really do need to let their daughter go. Then I hope they go after the hospital and doctors who may be at least partially responsible for what happened to her....

What I hope does NOT happen is that this little girl take Terri Schiavo's place as a pawn of the right-to-lifers to further their own agenda without regard to her own health or welfare, or rights of privacy or self-determination, as they ride rough shod over her and her family to do so.

I read an article wherein the Sheriff of Alameda County stated the child was moved out of state. I don't blame the family for not disclosing further information. It HAS been a circus. I hope they are able to find some peace outside of the public's eye.

CA use to have some different laws about which doctors could declare brain death declaration. I'm glad to see Children's Hospital in Oakland fight to make sure a Pediatric Neurologist is the only specialist allowed to examine and interpret testing on this teen.

Few remain on life support until a second opinion from a Stanford Pediatric (Child) Neurologist can be obtained.

Having worked in a large PICU, I have seen children die who shouldn't have. I've also seen children live who should have died. I have seen medical events that can't be explained by medical science.
I do believe in miracles. There is no other way for me to explain clinical events I've seen, for me.

Some of my colleagues also believe in miracles and others do not. A case like this forces each team member to evaluate his/her own personal beliefs while continuing the best clinical practices for the patient.

A negative brain flow means no blood is reaching and providing oxygen for the brain. An EEG will show if the brain has any "electrical activity," kind of similar to a cardiac EKG.

Here's one article. I'm sure there will be more.

Judge tells Calif. hospital to keep treating teen

I'm not a calloused person. I empathize with her family. I also know what our PICU had to do with a family who was convinced Jesus would walk through the door and heal their child. It was difficult and emotionally painful to all who provided care for the teen.

I would ask anyone who posts to be respectful of the 13 y.o. teenage girl, her family and their beliefs as well as the beliefs of other posters, including mine. The PICU team I worked with agonies of what to do for three weeks before a decision was made.

Having been there, I say Please God, bless everyone involved.

Going back a couple posts, I haven't seen anything indicating that anyone, except maybe a couple people no one's really heard of, is making this into a Terry Schiavo type event. Most people are smart enough to be able to differentiate between "brain damaged" and "brain dead".

Didn't Schiavo end up pretty much not having much left except her brain stem when she was autopsied after she died?

She was yet another case of the EMT's getting to the house too quickly.

People put too much trust in conventional medicine. I agree with the mother who said.... "The doctors think they know everything. We'll if they did, she wouldn't be here today". Touche mama.

They could go after the doctor even if she's taken off life support and allowed to go meet her Maker....
