Trump did five things against Russian interests Obama was afraid to do:
1) Bomb Assad's forces when they "crossed a line".
2) Give Ukraine lethal arms and combat training.
3) Move military to Poland
4) Forced delay of Nordstream 2
5) Welcomed Macedonia into NATO
You could argue how big of a deal they were, but they weren't received well in Moscow that is for sure.
The only things I can think of he did in Russia's interest:
1) Talked about Russian relations as if they were more important
2) Actively worked against NATO overall and pulled some troops from Europe and Syria.
And you're ignoring what Republicans other than Trump have said about Russia and its not exactly a love song.
DKM, think for a moment; if someone thinks that relations with country the A. ( Russia, Germany, Burundi, whatever) is "more important," then what would this person envision for his policies with such country?
Hostile actions? Lethal arms supplied to its enemies?
What?
Obviously Trump's intentions towards Russia, his planned politics were very different comparably to what took place.
Because of all the howling coming from the "left," his advisers decided to not to risk his presidency, and necessary sacrifices on that front were made.
But even then, the actions of Trump's cabinet were not enough.
When it comes to Russia, the left wants blood, they want to go for the "jugular vein," so my explanation of the difference between Trump's approach and the approach of the "left" to Russia still stands.
P.S. Of course there are some Republicans that side with Democrats on certain issues, Russia being one of them. ( And vice versa.)
It's to be expected.
Electorate tends to coalesce around a leader that provides the most security when a country feels threatened externally. The 1990's also provide a lesson on what would happen if outside influences had their way. Safety nets and public services would be eliminated. Currency would be devalued and interest rates would sharply rise. The state would become less able to afford the military expenditures. The resulting social chaos would be aimed at getting more republics to break apart and valuable industries to be sold to outside investors.
In the present global economic system, those kinds of things should be going on in the US, Europe, and Japan due to their extreme indebtedness. They're well past the point where Shock Therapy has been applied to countries like Yugoslavia, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, etc. It is all about trade flows. When they can't accumulate enough reserves from trade, the problems of external debt will appear since they won't be able to control the currency exchange rates.
Fun fact . Birch bark letter of 1140-1160 from Staraya Russa.

Some truth to this. But you can't say exactly how it would be if opposition were permitted without threat of violence and seizure.
Just so you know DKM I agree that it is time for Putin to go. He should step down. The question is who will replace him and his people? Russia has made huge strides and continues to make significant progress, Russians have never been as well off in their entire history as they are now. If you work hard and apply yourself constructively in life you can have a very good life.
I do believe Russia is under threat also. Foreign powers seek the overthrow of the Russian state and the destruction of Russia as a nation.
Navalny is a crazy man with a messiah complex. He's an egomaniac making the wrong bets and he is a traitor to his country.
I can see no reason for Russia to change anything considering the situation. As a matter of fact Russia should be harsher in ways. The only thing the west understands is a club upside the head.
New poem about Moscow from Alexander Elin. He is an oppositionist and I do not agree with him, but he is very talented.
