Not quite a food desert. Their is a new Aldi practically down the street now and I suspect the new HT on Augusta has lured a lot of their business away.
Where is the Aldi? Ah.. Ok.. There beside the JitB.. I forgot about that place.
But, it remains.. For the folks south of there. So, I'm talking the folks around the Augusta Rd/White Horse Rd intersection area. Donaldson Center.. They have a bit of a hike to get to a grocery store.
Either up to the Aldi or down to the Ingles in Moonville.
That's why I've thought that some kind of grocery store right around where the old Community Cash was could not only provide a closer option, but also perhaps spur some redevelopment in that area
Walmart built a store across the street from the Pickens Bi-Lo a few years ago. Why go to Bi-Lo when I can go to Walmart and get groceries much cheaper?
That works If Walmart has the items on the shelf in stock that you are looking for. They have a terrible problem with keeping items on the shelf in my experience. Kind of nice going to Publix or Bi-Lo and seeing the stuff you are looking for in stock.
I am surprised about two BI-LO stores locations in Greenville and Pickens counties closing. The two affected BI-LO store locations in Spartanburg County have been obvious for awhile.
I thought that Greer location has been obvious for some time.
I imagine the leases were just up on those locations and they weren't performing well enough to come to terms on renewing. Imagine that corner at Mauldin Rd/S Pleasantburg is ripe for redevelopment( maybe something else like a giant new Spinx and carwash with QT going up on the other corner) and I wonder if Publix will have any interest in the Pickens store?
The proposed use is 2 stand alone buildings, with 1 fast food, and the other either retail or restaurant. But, they could build anything depending on who leases.
Maybe this will be the long awaited Popeye's in Greenville.
JCPenney is closing their store at Greenwood Mall (formerly Cross Creek) in July. It's the only closure in the upstate and all of SC. They have operated in Greenwood almost 100 years according to the Index Journal. They moved to the mall in 1979 prior to operating uptown since 1925.
JCP also announced this month they were exiting the appliance business in all stores after starting it back up a couple of years ago.
