Aspartame is just the methyl ester of two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. There is nothing in aspartame that a normal healthy diet does not already include in significant quantities. A few grams of protein will have more of both amino acids than a serving of aspartame, and there are plenty of methyl esters in fruits.

If you consume insane quantities of it, like consuming multiple 2-liter bottles of diet soda every day, you may have some health problems. However, this can be said for most foods.

In general, drinking anything in excess besides water is bad for you. Gatorade, milk, fruit juice, coffee, tea... they all must be consumed in moderation. Soda, whether diet or regular, is not meant to be a substitute for water.

Having bad nutrition is not the same as being poisoned. It sounds to me like you have a poor diet and want to find someone to blame for it.

You don't have to believe me, but I do have a doctorate in chemistry and I have taught biochemistry and metabolism to dozens of the doctors that you seem to distrust.

If this was the case you would have died in short order, you can't live without an immune system.

Moderator cut: orphaned quote off topic
In the greater scheme of things, aspartame is much better for most people than a comparable amount of sweetness from sugar. However, most people would be healthier without any sweetener at all. When you make the choice to eat or drink sweet foods and beverages, you assume the responsibility for the risks associated with your choice.

People put a bunch of chemicals and processed crap in their bodies and then complain about feeling crappy and on top of that blame doctors.

Love it.

Jeez....aspartame really must be a poison. I didn't believe it until I read some of jacel0's posts but it's quite obvious now. Thanks jacel0 for the awakening.

If you are going to avoid the ingredients in aspartame, here is the diet you will need to follow:

The PKU Diet | Low Protein Living

To avoid phenylalanine, you cannot have;

• Meat.
• Poultry
• Fish
• Eggs
• Cheese
• Pulses (beans and lentils)
• Meat substitutes (e.g. soya products and Quorn™)
• Nuts.

You may have

• Most fruits
• Some vegetables
• Salad
• Sugar
• Spices
• Herbs
• Oil
• Margarine
• Butter

To avoid aspartic acid, you cannot have meat, fish, poultry, seeds, legumes, dried apricots, tofu, soy

Foods High in Aspartic acid - Aspartic acid Foods

A diet beverage with aspartame has about the same amount of phenylalanine as a serving of cream cheese.

People, it is not biologically possible to be "poisoned" by aspartame.

Aspartame is useless garbage which shouldn't be consumed by anyone, toxic or not. It's high time for people to stop indulging our natural predisposition towards the taste of sweet, which is a big reason why so many people are obese today. You don't need a sugar substitute, you need to stop indulging in the taste of sweet everyday altogether.
