I absolutely was NOT talking about the City, I was talking about the suburbs and specifically the communities in them.

The city is not that nice in my opinion.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

You went to Texas with preconcieved notions that some loser that you met who heard from another loser that Texas was blankity- blank and never tried to be openminded there.

The funny thing that many people notice including me is that Northeasterners HATE Texas based 90% of the time on heresay and no real life experience. (Not surprising because the Northeast is very provincial)

..... but Texans dont hate the Northeast

Says something about that open minded and accepting thing that people in Mass think they invented
I went thinking I was ready to move, just wanted to confirm it was as nice as the pictures on all those Community Websites. They look just like some Atlanta and Charlotte communities my wife and I love.

Read the thread, your statement could not be further from the truth.

You have beach (yes the water is browner than Destin...thank you Mississippi River) in the south, you have rolling hills in the middle, you have flat plains in the north, and piney forests in the east.

When you come here with comparisons to how close it will be to other parts of the nation - you will be sorely disappointed. It's better to just come here with an open mind, and the possibilities of a future for yourself. Then you can see Houston for the great city it is.

Sure it has urban sprawl, ugly bill boards, refineries, and lots of concrete/freeways. But it also has areas of charm, lots of friendly people, and lots of business opportunities. I've lived in DFW (and surrounding areas), Austin (and surrounding areas), San Antonio (and surrounding areas), and currently Houston. Houston is the least *pretty* of them all. But I don't want to move back to any of the other cities (save San Antonio - I could see myself moving back there).

You live here and don't like it...move out.

Simple as that.
You don't want different opinions on discussion board. Don't read.

I'm not sure what people expect when they visit Houston. I mean the complaints about the billboards and power lines, honestly seem petty to me. It is as though some are looking for reasons to fine the city uninhabitable. I'm not saying this necessarily applies to the OP. But to not move here, because of power lines? I've seen other 'favorable' cities that have above ground power lines and billboards, as well.

I've said it many times that Houston catches it both ways. It's criticized for not being like cities in the NE or West Coast, thus folks from these areas come here sorely disappointed. Yet when favorably compared, to some degree, with these cities, there is a relative amount of hostility.

Houston is often accused of trying to be like these cities with expectations that it should be like these cities, with the proclamations that "it'll never be like" them, all at the same time. It's zany. You truly cannot expect that when you come here, it will be just like other parts of the nation.

With all of that said, I think OP made the best decision for himself. I know that Houston (and Texas for that matter) is not for everyone, and truly, that is fine. OP i hope that one day you'll come back to just visit. Perhaps for a longer time than just a weekend.

As a new comer to Houston who came from a fantastic city and haven't been to Houston since 1984 I can say that in my 5 months living here we have been pleasantly surprised by all the beautiful neighborhoods, restaurants and shopping experiences. We will be able to easily live in this city for the next few years and feel really comfortable inviting our friends from Chicago and the West Coast to Houston and show them a great time.
