I dont live in NY and dont care about NY pricing. Its the most expensive city in the world with the 3rd most expensive rent.

A friend's daughter just moved to Santa Monica, she had to get a roommate. Each of them pays over $1,800, I forgot to ask the size of the place. I assume it's only 2 bedrooms.

Yep. Unless you are a trust fund (or sugar) baby, you need a roommate to live in most every part of SoCal. Most people I know have multiple roommates.

That’s what happens when politburo makes rent optional for two years (or more or less indefinitely in places such as SF/NYC/Boston where it takes several years to evict a deadbeat even under ideal conditions.) Or were you expecting property owners to just roll over, eat the losses and not do anything about it?

Default What do you expect?

Exorbitant rent increases were happening before the pandemic.

During the pandemic, we paid our rent on time and in full, and patiently waited for two deteriorating (one dangerous) conditions to be fixed. I can't elaborate because I am afraid - yes, a grown woman, former 25 year business owner, no shrinking violet, to elaborate in case I might be recognized by my landlord in this very small city. I want to live in peace and move when I want to move, not before then.

Why should we pay for the money you all lost? BS excuse for greed.

It’s similar to the insurance industry - you might not steal cars but your premiums will be ski-high if you live in a high crime location where car thefts are common. Same with rent - you might not be a deadbeat yourself but you’re paying for all the other deadbeats who took full advantage of politburo making rent optional for over two years.

You don't have to rent, you can move where you can afford to buy.



A lot of renters learn their lesson when they buy a home and a major repair or replacement of some type is necessary. No landlord will be there to save you, it's all their responsibility to take care of.

Much easier said then done in this country, especially these days with out of control inflation and an unstable economy. Its not like it was in the day where most everyone could afford a home. 64% of Americans own their home but only half that are new buyers. That means the vast majority of home owners are most likely Baby Boomers who bought homes back when it was actually affordable,
