The problem with cost of living in high rise buildings is the HOA fee. I lived in one in Chicago for a year. HOA fee was absurd, higher than the property tax bill. The cost and noisy neighbors drove me out, I would never live in a high rise building again. Oh yeah, the elevator quit working once during a false fire alarm scare. I had to carry a 20 pound dog down 11 flights to get him out so he could pee.

Never going to happen, and not really practical. This is especially true in condos, where there are a lot of common physical plant and services to be maintained.

As far as SFR development goes. this can be true, but is really besides the point. In a lot of areas the government requires HOAs be set up in new developments, because they want the homeowners paying to maintain their development directly (through the HOA), and not have that maintenance requirement dumped on the local government.

Cause everyone wants to live with the possibility of a tenement on wheels next door.
