Yet another of my 1-day getaways. 5:50am flight to L.A., 10pm return flight. $78 RT! $7 Tap card to ride the rails and buses all day! $85 total!

Took in the Hammer Museum @UCLA/Westwood, then bussed down Wilshire to LACMA, Los Angeles County Art Museum. OMG! 6 buildings of art, including a Korean and Japanese museum, 4 floors of art in one building, 3 in another. A special exhibit of Diego Rivera and Picasso. The Hammer museum featured exhibits of Dubuffet and Jimmie Durham.

Then a bus to Koreatown to connect to the Purple line rail to Pershing Square. Then to The Last Bookstore on 5th/Spring, one of the biggest used bookstores in L.A., and a whole room of Art books, many discounted, bought 9 of them.

Then took the Broadway bus up to Chinatown for dinner, while my roommate, Roberto, shopped for trinkets. Good lord, hasn't he got enough of those accordion fans!!!

A stroll downtown, then back to LAX on the train.

It will sure be nice when that Purple line subway is extended from Koreatown to UCLA, as they've got a good part of Wilshire all torn up, building rail stops, digging the tunnels, a $16 billion project.

Also anticipating the Crenshaw line under construction into LAX!

Anyone else interested a cheap L.A. get away, without a car?

Add $14 to park at LACMA, $12 to park at the Hammer Museum, and to park downtown to go to that bookstore, and pay to park in Chinatown, God knows how much!

And given your track record of bad luck, that trip could end up costing you hundreds!!!

Touche. lol BUT I could drive to LA, get a tam card for 7 bucks, and avoid all those costs and when the bus crashes, it's not my fault.

You need only drive to San Bernardino, and ditch your car there, hop on a commuter train to Union Station and go from there.

Or ditch your car in Asuza, at that big parking ramp there, get your Tap card, and hop on the Gold Line.

La/ San Bernadino = same thing in my book. Makes no difference to me which one I have to drive to.
But yeah, if you use your brain you can take trips inexpensively. I have 4 people so while you spend 78 dollars on airfare, I spend 312 on airfare. Or I spend 40 in gas. But if I was single I don't know if I'd save enough time flying to justify spending an extra 38 on airfare. Although, if I was single, I wouldn't have a gas hog minivan and could probably drive there and back for 30 making airfare much less attractive.

I overlook the fact that you have children along! So those cheap fares wouldn't do you much good!

I hate hate driving a car, to work, to the grocery store, wherever!

By the way, do they have flights from Las Vegas to Pahrump or Mesquite or Boulder City?

Be careful "ditching" your car in San Bernardino, chances are when you return you will have discovered that a meth head has turned it into his new home, new toilet, or both.

I LOVE driving. I just hate driving with other people on the road.
