Infrastructure is really crumbling here on LI, since most of the funds are going to labor, but when the state, counties and towns are steps from bankruptcy and leading the nation in indebtedness, good luck finding the funding. The LIRR example you point out is good one, where federal funds will go to the 2nd Ave. tunnel/East side access and Moynahan Station projects. Arguably, neither of the projects will improve time from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station. The 3rd rail main line project has been killed by nimbys. Forget about roads and airports, the first crumbling the later finding it difficult to find major carriers who will pay the price to fly into Suffolk, when you divert all of your funds to Politicians pet projects and the rest to union and public labor, there's no money left. Not to mention, the cost to have have a dude filling the potholes is huge, because he is going to have a more plush retirement than you or I.

The Seaford-Oyster Bay - CT bridge has been treated in detail in another thread on this forum, so I won't repeat, needless to say it aint going to happen. Not in our lifetimes.

The only hope becomes raising revenue and presently that means raising your taxes and adding fees and surcharges to services and stuff you buy. Gambling, while not pretty or a desirable neighbor, is an untapped source of huge revenue.
I am fully aware of the realities of accomplishing all this. I know local politics present a barrier from all fronts and many school district workers will not want to lose their jobs. But as MLK once said, "I have a dream". I am sure all of us share this dream. You have to start somewhere, right?

A real casino on LI should/would lead to an entertainment complex, hotels and feeder businesses.
What he said!

The heck with the Nassau Col. a nice resort hotel with an excellent concert venue (not a hockey rink, or out dated Westbury) would be a change for the better.

/agree

To go a bit further (shooting for the stars here) a Pro NFL football stadium to maybe even bring the Jets/Giants to actually play on NY soil instead of in NJ, nothing against NJ....just saying.

Or at least get them to wipe the NY off their helmets and change it to NJ since that's where they pay their taxes.

Long island isn't an attractive place to live
-extremely high tax rates and not much in return
-trashy/nasty population(urban flight leftovers)
-horrid weather(slushy wet winters/humid buggy summers)
-far commute from employment centers

Long island is in a slow spiral downwards and no stadiums or public works project will alleviate this trend.

Lower taxes in long island so its actually worth it for companies/people to move there.

They spent over a billion dollars on MetLife stadium, making it the largest and most expensive stadium in the NFL. I doubt they're going to ditch that for new digs in Uniondale.

Vote for most redundant thread bump. 2 "LI Stinks" bumps in one day with a new user name. Priceless. LI has high taxes?! Thanks for sharing that pearl. Maybe new politicians and lower taxes can do something about the weather.

Seems like long islanders get pretty defensive. Nothing new, snyde remarks as per usual.

Can't change the weather but definitely could be better on the jobs front.. Good day!

Let's not forget that our highly anticipated tax bill will be arriving by mail in the next few days. Our next to last one....I hope it stays below $12,000 though I doubt it.
