It's ALWAYS been a reason why businesses have closed. The restaurant business has always had high failure rates.

While there are these restaurants going out of business, there are still plenty opening as well. I've been to several that have opened up in the past month or so within walking distance of me.

The issues you brought up have always been present in the restaurant industry. Today the numbers are simply larger and many restaurants have no issue raising their prices to turn a profit.

Yes, it's harder today to start a restaurant. It takes lots of money and lots of hard work. My neighbor owns a coffee shop in town and they are having those issues. Guess what - she and her son are at the shop everyday at 5 AM and work hard along with their staff to keep up a very strong business. They raise prices and we keep coming there. Many others simply don't want to deal with it anymore and simply close their restaurants.

Right. And you have to be good enough to get people returning with the higher prices.

A fair chunk (not all) of the places closing can't make it work as what they were selling at X just fine, won't sell enough at 1.5X to retain their customer base. Makes perfect sense.

Maybe there have just been too many food establishments? It amazes me how Dunkin Donuts, starbucks and McDonalds have many many employees or at least the ones near me do. Are they paid well?

Then the mom and pop run places can't find help. It's just weird unless the people at the above mentioned places get paid well...but they don't really get tipped.

Thats what I've been saying for years. There's high turnover rates and frankly outside of Starbucks it's mostly younger people. I think it was more on population growth supplying a steady stream

They have to pay minimum wage and there's not much wiggle room when it comes to rents/utilities etc. The only place most restaurants can cut corners is the food quality. It really is the cheapest/bottom of the barrel factory farmed stuff because our society is desensitized to suffering of animals.

I think we're just slowly returning to where restaurants are a luxury. Gone will be the days where an average Joe can eat out at least one meal a day. Whatever. Society can afford to go on a restaurant diet.



As for the big chains able to retain staff while the mom and pops struggle to hire, a big part is probably the higher minimum wage that places like McD's and DD can absorb far more easy than the corner breakfast and lunch place. Just be sure not to be stingy when tipping the remaining local places, if you want to keep them around.
