Well, if you want to talk about now... the labor participation rate nationally is still several % below pre-pandemic levels. They might not be drawing unemployment but if they aren't, then it comes to how are they getting the moola for rent let alone anything else.

Usual leftie half-truths and omissions - amigo is talking about unemployment rate which only counts those who are actively looking for work and doesn't account for all the leeches sitting on their as$ living off the cash they squirreled away over the two years of free "enhanced unemployment" money with nothing to spend it on and optional rent, most likely still not paying rent because housing courts have parsec-long backlogs. Needless to say that money will eventually run out and courts will get through the backlog but Uncle Joe won't leave millions of his voters out in the cold, he's got his money printing press and he's not afraid to use it.

Plus, they would need to be laid off (generally) to get unemployment and it's based on what they're paid. Unemployment for servers based on the wage they receive is not livable in Mass. It's pocket change. And short term pocket change at that.

People here keep promoting false narratives of everyone else getting money off the government. It's doesn't align with the data / reality at all. Our overall social safety net as a Nation is rather pathetic.

Right everyone out there is just working their ass off. No one needs these lowly minimum wage jobs anymore, they're so beneath everyone. US is simply thriving.

There is good data on this. It's largely people that were at or near standard retirement age that left the workforce and didn't return. There is a pretty small percentage of married people that went one income and learned to get by on less. It's not a mystery. It's not a conspiracy. It makes perfect sense.

I think looking around most people know people that learned that some of what they thought were needs, were actually wants, during the height of covid. Those lessons stayed with people. This is just one of those many situations where both anecdotal observations align perfectly with the actual data.

Nice try amigo but no, all you needed was the “COVID” magic word and you were set for two years even if you walked out and burned the whole place down. Similar to the “asylum jefe, asylum” magic word de jour. And with rent made optional (it still is now and will be for several more years due to court backlogs in politburo states where it takes at least a year to evict even when housing courts have zero cases to hear) it was more than enough to sit on you a*s and not worry about having to work.

Actual fraud with social welfare systems is low. Sure there'll always be those people that say "I know people that have been on welfare their whole life" but the reality is they might be living with someone else that is on systems. There are those that drop out of qualifications and concentrating poverty is not a good thing.

They were paying $14,000 in commercial rent PER MONTH and then another $6,000 in utilities PER MONTH for a restaurant!

Before labor, before taxes, before supplies, before buying the food etc. That means the basics to just operate means $240,000 a year. That's insane.

Some elderly have left the country to seek cheaper independent living elsewhere,in Mexico,Portugal,Thailand,Malaysia ,Panama .
They are still healthy, not yet ready for nursing homes, they just find it cheaper to live overseas.

Commercial rent has not gone up,in fact in some cities,it has come down,so many empty stores /
but utilities, food and labor have gone up.
It has always been a joke,if you run a retail shop, the sales proceed of the first 14 days go to pay rent.
$14K a month is not that bad,a so so neighborhood is $10k
