Exclamation Uh-Oh

"CDC says highly transmissible coronavirus variant could become dominant U.S. strain by March" per a story in today's WaPo.

Excerpt: "The highly contagious variant of the coronavirus first seen in the United Kingdom will become the dominant strain in the United States within about two months, its rapid spread heightening the urgency of getting people vaccinated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted Friday in its most sobering warning yet about mutations in the virus. In every scenario explored by the CDC, the U.K. strain, which British researchers estimate is roughly 50 percent more transmissible than the more common coronavirus strain, will account for a majority of cases in the United States by some point in March. The CDC released modeling data to back up its forecast showing a rapid spike in infections linked to the U.K. strain. The agency said the emergence of these mutation-laden variants requires greater efforts to limit viral spread — ... "

Even though vaccines exist, the worst is yet to come. I expect the daily death tolls to rise for a while and hospitals to be crushed by a tsunami of cases. I hope I'm wrong but that's what I'm afraid is our fate. The states of CA and AZ are among the worst hit right now. Keep on wearing those masks, keeping your distance, avoiding crowds, washing hands, etc.

Stay safe.

It depends. I havent heard if the UK version is exactly worse than the originally virus unlike the South African strain, other than being far easier to spread the virus. I hope it isn't and hope this study and theory is wrong. Otherwise the Arizona method of fighting through Covid will need to stop and we will need to shutdown.

The U.K. version spreads a lot easier but is said to be on par with the earlier form of the virus as far as the lethality.

But.... if it spreads easier then more people will get it and if more people get it then it will add to the case load in hospitals and cause more deaths.

I just did a curbside food pickup at Firebirds Grill in Peoria and the parking lot was packed; you'd never know there was a raging pandemic with over 400,000 deaths.

I’ve found ignorance/arrogance on this worse in the WV. I was at westgate yesterday. Yikes.

I was in tucson and they took it extremely seriously. I almost think it’s better for business that way. I felt a lot safer being out.

No, we will NOT need to shut down, and it shouldn't even be up for discussion. Our western neighbor has put more stringent mitigation efforts in place, yet they're among the hardest hit states. Various reasons (some beyond our control) account for why CA & AZ have some of the worst COVID numbers. Shutting down is the coward's way out, and nothing positive has resulted from it.

Oh I am sure it could, but that is we are talking serious cases. I am hopeful that we do not.

In some places yeah. I love movies but I haven't gone since they re-opened. I don't think many have. That said, a lot of people have gone back to stores. I try to not go as often to the stores because as I will get to, there are many who will either not mask up or keep them down on their chin.

Yeah, the West Valley (I haven't been to Westgate but work and go shop in Surprise) is not great. Lots of people that "wear a mask" upon entry if they are checked at stores, they remove them later. There are also a number of people that do not wear a mask period. I have drastically cut down on going into stores because of this issue.

Across from Firebirds is a Harkin's with 14 screens. The lot only had a fraction of a typical Friday night crowd; seems people are staying away.

NEWS FLASH...

There are AHOLES EVERYWHERE, NOT just the "west valley"..

I was in Tempe and Mesa today, and I saw the same exact thing, masks down, taken off if no one in the store was checking, and others not even wearing one, so spare us the "west valley isnt great for mask compliance" non sense...there are morons everywhere in the valley..

As a Tempe resident I’ve not seen this. I’d put general mask compliance in Tempe at around 90-95%
