When my husband was in Viet Nam he and his buddies figured out their hourly pay. It came out to 13 cents an hour.

Those employers hate having an employee leave for extended periods of time. they have to replace them. Then they have to allow the military person to return to their old job.Simpler for them to just lay off or fire all the military people they have working for them. Its all about production you see..........
Well we had a Union Shop, you got hired at the beginning of the month and went into the service at the end of the month and came back 2 years later you not only had your job but your net credit service with the company when you got back was 2 years 1 month, they counted your time in the service as if you never left.

As I previously pointed out, that is federal law under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). It has absolutely nothing to do with unions, nice attempt to spin the truth.

Not really a spin. This is one of many areas where a union helps.they can go to bat for you if there is any foul play attempted by the company. trying to do it by yourself would involve hiring a lawyer, good luck with that........
unions do much more than,as many people believe just go for higher wages.....

If an employer wants to personally hire a vet, fine, you'd never know, but to make it required to give them "points" is some crap.
As the hiring authority I had certain expectations of employees. Many of these expectations were satisfied by the fact that an applicant had satisfactorally completed military training and honorabled completed their term of service. So the military veteran was more qualified

Unions are corrupt socialist parasites that suck off the hard labor of others. The only thing they are good for is spending your union dues on their socialist agendas that any true American would vehemently oppose. They have absolutely no interest in helping anyone other than themselves.

No nice try to spin the truth by you "Act of 1994" , I'm talking about a union agreement that pre-dates your 1994 date, it had already been in existence at the time I joined the union in 1971. IBEW Local 827

If being in the military is the most important qualification for your employees fine, but as far as the gov goes? Nah.

Should vets get get preference in job hiring?

No. Nobody forced them to go into the military. They should compete for jobs just like everyone else.
