It was legal for the southern states to secede in 1861. Didn't stop the federal government then, and it wouldn't stop them now.

At any rate, its not going to happen, its a stupid idea floated by silly people. The same silly people like Sarah Palin who want Alaska to leave the union.

To be fair, they couldn't really stop them. The USA has the power to stop them now.

You know, I'm on board with it. They can go. But it will never happen. Most of them are probably living in their mother's basement with a laptop in their lap (and who knows what else) - getting off while they post about it on CD.

Lots of them have very large . . post counts.

Default Texas Republican Wants State To Leave U.S. Over Obama Win

"Peter Morrison, who serves as treasurer of the Hardin County Republican Party, wrote in his post-election newsletter that there was a clear solution to the problem of Obama’s re-election.

“We must contest every single inch of ground and delay the baby-murdering, tax-raising socialists at every opportunity,” Morrison wrote. “But in due time, the maggots will have eaten every morsel of flesh off of the rotting corpse of the Republic, and therein lies our opportunity.”

“Texas was once its own country, and many Texans already think in nationalist terms about their state. We need to do everything possible to encourage a long-term shift in thinking on this issue. Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government? Let each go her own way in peace, sign a free trade agreement among the states and we can avoid this gut-wrenching spectacle every four years,” he wrote."

Can they take Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina with them?

Texans have the right to secede. It's going to happen at some point -- empires fall apart, socialist empires fall apart - look at what happened to the USSR.

The face of today's GOP--delay, obstruct and denigrate, and if that doesn't work, take your ball and go home.

Some minor county official of the local GOP in a deep red state calls for secession.

Surprise, surprise.

Bye, bye.
All of that military $$ goes, too.
And they'll have to get passports and visas to enter the US.
They can't fly over US land without permission.
No insurance, colleges would not be accredited.

This is great.
Another R thinking it through.
Yeah.

A little meeting at the Appomattox Court House settled that idea in the negative.

Oh hey and there's the little matter of Texas v. White, 74 U.S. 700 (1869)

By the way, what do secessionist Texans plan to do with the rights of nearly half the population, er maggots, that don't agree with the Republican vision of the universe?

When it happens, it won't be just Texas that goes -- most of the South will secede also.

To the liberals -- just think of this like your beloved Palestinian statehood.
