Well, it is almost that time of the year again. People working in departments stores are instructed to say “Happy Holidays” instead of "Merry Christmas."
Well, yeah, Christmas is a religious holiday, but these days many people that are from other religions celebrate Christmas as well more as a holiday since its a large tradition in this country.
I wonder do you feel pressured or obligated to say "Happy Holiday" instead of "Merry Christmas"?
You can say whatever you like. Now how about stopping the use of tax dollars for religious lights, displays, and parades. If the church wants to put those things on of of their pocket, petition the city council.

No. I will continue to say Merry Christmas, because I am a Christian. Others can say whatever they want. Just don't force me to say something else.
The Reason for the Season is Jesus Christ. If you don't believe in Christ, don't celebrate Christmas. It's that simple.
I find it extremely insulting to the families and survivors of true religious oppression. Many people have been tortured or killed just for being members of the wrong religion or defying an order to discontinue practicing their faith.
When whiny Christians that are living in the United States attempt to claim that they are being oppressed it makes me really angry. Like somehow a business choosing to use the phrase "Happy Holidays" is even in the same ballpark as being executed, sent to a concentration camp or any true form of religious persecution.
Exactly. My people actually were NOT allowed to practice their religion (Judaism) freely, and millions were killed for doing so anyway. They had to endure pogroms, the Holocaust, etc, and people here think they're being oppressed because someone else greeted them nicely but omitted the word Christmas?? Oy, must be nice to have such a charmed life to consider this a tragedy.

1) No one is forcing you to say anything.
2) How rich that you assert your intent on doing just what you please, then immediately turn around and tell people not to celebrate Christmas unless they meet your qualifications.
3) If you think most Christmas celebrations aren't secular - exchanging gifts, putting up a tree, lights and tinsel and songs like 'Happily Holidays' (is Irving Berlin persona non grata to you for that?) - then you really need a clue. Face it, most 21st century Christmas celebrations have no more to do with Christianity than does a chocolate Easter bunny. And I'll happily continue those celebrations despite the fact that I'm not a Christian.

I don't know of anyone who forces other people to say anything, so I guess we're cool?

Interestingly, the majority of Christmas celebrators I know don't really believe in Jesus Christ... but hey, in this country we actually are free to celebrate or not celebrate whatever we want! It's nice, huh?
No. I rarely say "Merry Christmas" to anybody besides my friends and family. If someone says it as I'm leaving a store or something, I'll usually say it back. And if one were to get truly offended because I didn't say "Happy Holidays", they can shove it up their ass.
No, the Reason for the Season is the Winter Solstice.

Since you apparently didn't actually read the discussion in the thread, I'll bring you up to speed. We're discussing what people say to greet each other during the holiday season, not what holidays they observe during that period.

The only people here who seem to be offended about anything appear to be christians, butthurt because their preferred greeting isn't being used by everyone.
If it's not Christmas, what holiday are we celebrating? The Holidays holiday? Ridiculous.
Only Christians are made to feel like we can't openly celebrate our religious holiday.
In December alone, there is Chanukkah (Judaism), Bodhi Day and associated festivals (Buddhism), Panacha Ganapathi (Hinduism), Winter Solstice, Yule, Kwanzaa, Hogamany (my favorite), Boxing Day, and New Year's Eve, not to mention Advent, St. Lucia's Day, and Christmas itself on the Christian front. Christmas to me is using Pagan traditions to celebrate a false Messiah, but I let you do it.
But your people haven't always shown me the same respect. In the 1990s (not 1950s - 90s), we had a cross burned on our lawn. At various times, we had a rock thrown through a window displaying a menorah, and various other overt forms of violence and discrimination because my parents dared tell my brother and I to be proud of being Jewish. When was the last time you had to think long and hard about if you wanted to display your Christmas tree because you're afraid that's going to make your house a target for religious-based violence and vandalism? Never? Right. So please stop complaining.
The only people who ever "correct" me when I say Happy Holidays are Christians. It's not political pressure making me say it - it's simply a fact. There are many holidays in that period, and Christmas is perhaps the least important to me of those holidays. If I know someone is Christian, only then is "Merry Christmas" appropriate, and only ON Christmas.

It's a day some take personal.
As a Christian I don't put too much Jesus into the holiday either...... My house is filled with more Santa Claus (old fashion) decorations it makes my manger look some what silly. I do have to say I'm "Christmas Crazy." Christmas decorating is a blast, I even decorate for others Christians and non-christians, no one seems to want to offend each other.
This year I'm considering not putting the manager up, after all my Savior is a man and will return in that form. Christmas has come so far from the meaning of Christ it's almost embarrassing to relate the day to Christ. It's all about spending and debt, everything that Christ was against most people work their fingers to the bone to pay off the debt before next year.
Butthurt don't think so....... most non-believers are in more debt than most believers.
Happy Holidays!
