Teachers have always gone up against a shooter ever since these shootings began. With nothing at all except their bodies. Even a rock is better than nothing at all.
The object is not to kill the shooter. It is always to stop the shooter from shooting kids.
A rock could knock a rifle out of the shooter's hands, and a rock could break the clip or other part on an AR-15, incapacitating the weapon.
The police are on their way. A shooter doesn't even need to be injured to stop shooting. The cops will get him anyway. None of the shooters have ever escaped.
Of course there are many things better than rocks in a school. A hammer is probably better than a rock, or a shovel, an ice-chipper, or any number of things. The problem is they are all stored in locked closets, usually in hard to reach places.
A pile of bricks would probably be better than rocks. Sports equipment could work. Lumber. There's a lot of stuff that would work.
Something simple needs to be right on hand, should not pose as much a threat to the kid's lives as the shooter's, and throwing rocks is a lot better than trying to throw chairs, school books and cell phones. Buckets of rocks are better for barricading a door as well. Buckets of rocks can stop bullets. Back packs and prayers sure won't.
“At one time I just had the idea of river stone, they`re the right size for hands, you can throw them very hard and they will create or cause pain, which can distract,” said Helsel.
Helsel says teachers, staff and students were given active shooter training through a program known as ALICE which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate and they routinely hold evacuation drills for active shooter simulations.
But if a teacher decides to lockdown a classroom, there are rocks in a five-gallon bucket kept in every classroom closet that students could throw if shooters get inside.
Still, Helsel says the rocks are seen as a last resort."
So; what do you think? It is only a small part of their plan - but I think it would empower students that would otherwise feel helpless.
Not a bad idea. Every student should at least have access to something to defend themselves. The armed security can't be everywhere.

every classroom already have blunt weapons... every pair of safety scissors, every desk and chair, every kid, they can all be thrown at the shooters
Yeah, as a great example of just how effective rocks are against modern weapons, someone should show this guy what happens to Palestinian kids when they try throwing rocks at armed soldiers. duh.
