There is, in fact, a federal tax law that specifically states if the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee makes a written request for an individual’s tax returns — as Rep. Richard Neal has done seeking Trump’s — the Treasury secretary “shall furnish” those returns. The law says those returns would be reviewed confidentially in an executive session."
Yes, just because someone is in public office does not justify legally forcing them to divulge private papers.
I concur. It is unreasonable. The police just can't go and demand that you or I hand over our tax returns or any other legal documents. No, they need more than that to justify a warrant/subpoena be issued by a court of law. Congress, as a branch of government, is no different. They need a smoking gun so to speak before they can get their hands on POTUS' returns.
Congress demanding Trump's tax returns seems a gross violation of the Fourth Amendment. What justification is there to demand Trump's returns?
Because it is the law that congress can demand tax returns from the IRS. Even a tyrant such as Donald J Trump is not above the law. If he had followed the tradition of all major presidential candidates over the last 50 years, this would not even be an issue. Trump however once again thinks he is above others and could care less about transparency.
