Norway has done a great job with their abundance of oil and they still are productive so I'm impressed. But I stil don't think their systme would translate well to the USA.

What do you think could not change?

Would be awesome if we could - for instance - convince chemical companies that they shouldn't dump their toxic waste by the sheer power of ethical argumentation. Experience has shown us that we can't, and now we're collectively on the hook for thousands of Superfund sites. The market has massively rewarded those who crap in their own backyard - the cost of clean-up was made an externality.

Regulations that dictate the proper treatment of toxic waste - enforced, if you will, at gunpoint - rolls the cost of producing toxic waste back into the product price and lets the market actually work.

Every law has a gun behind it.
Maybe in the US where every one has a gun. But in Europe people who refuse being arrested usually try to kick and beat policemen, who react accordingly.

But I still don't get your point. We are humans, a social species. We live in societies. Society makes the rules and everyone has to obey and play by those rules. Those who don't get punished. That's the way it works, be it with humans, or whales, or chimps or whatever.

Norway is a small somewhat a single demographic of people with similar cultural value and experience that trust their fellow Norwegians. america is a diverse multi racial group of immigrants with differing values.

What policies?

You should at least know what our policies are, that Americans could not adopt.

Ask the general US population about our polices, and they would most likely poll in the 60-70% approval rate.

You have the wrong impression of Norway's population. It is not Island. Per capita Norway has about the same number of immigrants as the US, namely 14% of the population.

Isn’t Norway a major oil producer and exporter?
