It's probably a matter of commitment. Does a government really believe in and thus push change or not?
Is it what people want or what politicians want? There is a difference you inow

In the West it should be the same thing actually. Not necessarily in China, sure...

I think when you have a country a big part of whose population is utterly egoistic and kind of backwards, politicians should push what's right based on their higher level of knowledge, reason, vision etc., even if that means against the will of a part of the population.

I don't know where your from, but here its the opposite with politicians. They are largely unintelligent, unreasonable, prone to violence and cant see past the next election. They are quite adept at grifting, opening envelopes with stuffed cash, threatening little people, securing contracts for friends, bombing countries that dont go along...

Maybe that's better in China as there are no elections Nor are there government and parliament fighting each other. So as odd as it might seem, chances are that undemocratic China is more likely to do the right things as long as the leader is not a moron, but listens to his experts.

That must mean you think the little girl in Norway who spoke at the UN is "kind of backwards and utterly egoistic." Or she is very smart because she agrees with you ?

The latter
Having said that, I didn't like her melodramatic way recently. I actually had to giggle as I watched her speak in NY. She seemed more like a bad actress...
