No they are not. One innocent person has died so far and he wasn't one of the men returning fire. They other that has died was the CRIMINAL SHOOTER.
So you were HOPING innocent, law abiding citizens protecting the others would DIE just because they legally carry a gun and used them in self defense? That is sick and disgusting.
He entered a place of worship intending to kill people.
He pulled a rifle out and shot two people and aimed at the pastor but was shot by a parishioner (or perhaps two - two did shoot at him) and he was killed himself.
Based on the facts that he had more ammunition and was actively aiming his gun at someone when he was shot, I believe he intended to kill more people. Thankfully, legally armed US citizens stopped him from doing so. And just a note: They didn't shoot anyone else and their guns didn't jump out of their hands and start committing crimes.
