If you had carefully read my OP, I posited an intelligent thesis for a WAY OUT of the quagmire we have gotten ourselves into in the Middle East. Originally it was for oil. And just like Vietnam, we were suckered into taking the place of an 'ally' (France in Vietnam and Britain in the Middle East) when they gave up and left. It is time we got out too!

Previous Presidents have not had the insight to play the Long Game, and instead made payoffs to kick the can down the road. We are now in a different time: the US is a net-EXPORTER of oil. The only other reason I see that the US stay in Iraq is to be a buffer between our allies in the region and their more extreme religious neighbor, Iran. And that’s not good enough for me.

So let’s take the Out that the Iraqi Parliament has just given us, and get the hell outta Dodge!

As far as Iran goes – it depends entirely on the Ayatollah's response. Right now the ball is in his court, after the US aced him. So we currently have the advantage. This MAY bring Iran back to the negotiating table, and things MAY be resolved diplomatically, especially the nuclear issue. But if Iran decides to use military force, it will give Trump the justification to use another Shock & Awe. And this time it will be decisive with technology and weapons unheard of the last time, and we will destroy their nuclear facilities! Trump is playing hard ball - the only way the barbarians in the Middle East know how to play!

Yeah right, Rum.

Your boy tRump is a stable genius who knows more about the middle east than the generals or any of his advisors. </sarcasm>

His ill-considered assassination will do nothing to extricate America from that pit of misery, hatred and violence.

It'll have to opposite effect, getting us even deeper into that mess. You even acknowledge as much in your last paragraph.

We in the west tend to look at the ME as conflicts over oil. In reality, the conflict is the thousand year old push and pull between Shia and Sunni.

Yes, we should get the hell out and allow them to continue to butcher one another like they've done since prehistory. It's their favorite pastime.

Taking extremely provocative action isn't a move in that direction.

what was Obama's end game? He pulled us out of Iraq called them a stable, self-reliant nation and then started a new war there. Can anybody explain?

BREAKING NEWS: Brigadier General William Seely, U.S. military's Task Force Iraq, sent a letter to the head of Iraq's Joint Operations Command stating:

'Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, [the coalition] will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement. We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure'

Great! Now we have an 'OUT' to get out of this FN quagmire without having to make excuses to our 'allies' in the Middle East why we are no longer willing to allow our troops to be a buffer between them and their religious extremists in Iran. IMO: Iraq is nothing more than an extension of Iran from now on! Let them sort it out!

See Objective #1 in OP.

PS: President Trump was right in taking the option of taking the option to turn the ‘Most Wanted Terrorist in the World’ into Hellfire Shawarma!

Pentagon has reported this letter was informing Iraq of repositioning troops, not withdrawal.

But what about the departure part then?

{shrug} it doesn't say we are going to obey the order, it just acknowledges their right to make such an order...

Hmmmmm let's see, now.

This is what Trump inherited as he came into office:

1.ISIS was practically defeated
2. Iraq was our ally
3. The Kurds were our allies
4. Iran had stopped enriching uranium and was fully complying with inspections, as verified by Rex Tillerson
5. The Middle East was starting to show signs of stabilizing and hints of democracy arising
6. The USA was at a negotiated peace with Iran where diplomacy could begin
7. The people of Iran were demonstrating against their theocratic regime

Purely due to Trump incompetence and spite, we now have:

1. ISIS resurging
2. Iraq expelling the US and allying with Iran
3. What is left of the Kurds hating us
4. Iran enriching uranium again
5. The Middle East in turmoil again and going in the wrong direction
6. Iran at war with the USA and no diplomacy possible
7. A new Middle East war looming
8. The people of Iran are united against us and behind their theocratic regime.

So much winning.

Trump's end game is to continue chasing hallucinations of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East while North Korea completes its real weapons of mass destruction arsenal. North Korea detonated its first nuclear weapon in 2006 when Bush II was chasing hallucinations weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and it will likely perfect the ability to deliver those nuclear weapons to anywhere in the U.S. while Trump is chasing hallucinations of weapons of mass destruction in Iran.

Trumps playing 4D chess with America ending up with the short end of the stick every single time. How people continue to support this dimwit is the true question of our age.
