Will the Democratic party ever return to a moderate position that supports working Americans?
Of course, not. The party's policies consist of two things (1) taking from whites and giving to non-whites and (2) taking from workers and giving to non-workers.
The fault lines that used to separate the two parties used to be income level but that is no longer the case. The fault line now is more rural vs. urban with the Dem party more aligned with urban dwellers. The Dem party still champions issues of the working class but less so than it used to.
So, to answer the OP question: No, I do not think the Dem party will return to its working-class roots. I think it will increasingly represent urban people and their issues first and working class second. Obviously sometimes those overlap but less so now.
"Will the Democratic party ever return to a moderate position that supports working Americans?"
Yes, the Democrat party will eventually moderate. When? I'm unsure, but it could start in November 2020 if the Republicans win big.
If Trump's re-elected, AND the Dems lose the House, AND don't retake the Senate, they will move to the Right. They'll cast off the far left of the party like Bernie, Warren, the Squad, ect..
If the Dems do well in the November elections, we'll have more of the same lefty policies.
"My questions-just when did the Democratic party abandon the American working class? And is it possible they will ever return to embracing policies that actually support American workers, economic growth and freedom?"
It happened gradually over time. They traded in the "working class" (aka Middle class) for identity politics because the working class was shrinking, and Union membership was declining. To grow their tent, they had to change course.
The 2nd part of your queston goes further out than my Crystal Ball can see.
They will continue to push for higher and higher minimum wages even though it will hasten automation. They'll push for family leave. They'll continue to grow government, so the working class will continue to morph into the government-worker class.
Economic growth? No, they will continue to be anti-business out in the media, and when out in the public eye, but behind closed doors the kickbacks, payola, graft, campaign contributions, lucrative speaking engagements, book deals, ect.. will continue to grow. The behind the scenes corruption is at an all-time high now, and is a runaway freight train.
Freedom? No. That is not consistent with their goals. Rules, laws, regulations, will escalate post Trump-era.
The question is this. With either party truly be a moderate party? I don't think so. Everything is about extremes. It's "you're either with me or against me". No compromise on either side.

'Moderatism' is just Republican code for 'going easy on the business and special interests exploiting and cheating working Americans'.
Working Americans are not well served by moderate policies in this day and age, when Republicans are attacking everything that makes America great.
We need safe working environments. We need safe consumer products. We need to protect our environment. We need to protect Social Security.
We need a comprehensive health care system on par with the rest of the civilized world, notably like Israel, France, Japan and Germany.
These are not the times for half-assed measures and half-hearted commitment.
Wrong again. Working Americans are smart enough to figure out that without successful businesses we have no jobs. That business owners are not the enemy of workers. And that creating jobs and giving us a chance to make a living is not "exploiting and cheating" us. Moderate policies, such as we are finally embracing, are what is boosting American wages, driving down unemployment and protecting American citizens.
