Should have done what other nations did to end slavery.
It was heading that way, but then the Southern Gentlemen got all worked up about losing their property (humans, for those joining later) and decided to make their own nation, which would be way cooler and 100% protective of slavery.
And we know this was their motivation, because they thoughtfully wrote it down.

This does bring up an interesting point, why the focus on confederate male statues? Once again females (biological or otherwise) are treated as second class citizens. In the interest of fairness, we need to start tearing down all those female confederate statues pronto!
Wrong. One of the counterpoints to the debate on passing the 13th Amendment was "What next? Negroes voting? And then women would get the vote...?"
Women were third class citizens in that time period. It was entirely a white man's world, and women were there to follow orders.
" I look upon secession as anarchy. If I owned the four millions of slaves in the South I would sacrifice them all to the Union; but how can I draw my sword upon Virginia, my native state? "
His statue should be removed, in an effort to erase the legacy of those whose efforts would have resulted in the continuation of an abhorrent practice.
So he sold his principles and turned his back on America to keep his slaves, which he mistreated. Nothing new about that.
Taking those statues down would be a good start. Taking them down means "we don't pay tribute to Confederates". There is no reason to pay tributes to Confederates.
Agreed. There is no reason to pay tribute to traitors and terrorists.
Probably a lot of slaves who'd have shared that sentiment. But Lee went out and put his (considerable) talents to use for a nation founded for the exact purpose of keeping them chattel.
Bravery while fighting for an ignoble cause is not honorable.
First step to change is acknowledging the problem. That's a hell of a problem you got.
“It was entirely a white man’s world, and women were there to follow orders.”
Where’s the “problem”?! I can’t get my wife to do dishes.
