NCAA Title For Lia Thomas Is Joke With Biological Women As Punchline; Hardly a Laughing Matter
A joke was told in Atlanta on Thursday night.
It wasn’t funny.
A little more than three months after the possibility first arose, Lia Thomas captured a title while representing the University of Pennsylvania at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Most times, a national championship should be celebrated, the athlete commended for her hard work, dedication, and discipline.
Not this time.
No, this title-winning effort in the 500-yard freestyle should be met with nothing less than a head shake, an eye roll or a shrug of the shoulders. Why? Because Lia Thomas’ victory is an insult to the biological women who raced against her. Against those who fought for Title IX and equal opportunities for female athletes. Against science, and the unmistakable physiological differences between the male and female sexes.
I highly recommend the movie Stick It. About a girls gymnastic team that bands together with teams to ensure that they are happy with the outcome at an invitational.
At the invitational, Haley's talent shines and her return from gymnastics retirement seems for the better. But all is not what it seems in the scoring system. She starts to remember one of the many reasons she retired: the flaws in judging. The panels do not look at the difficulty of the move nor do they look at the technique; they merely take deductions for unimportant minor errors.
As Haley narrates: "It doesn't matter how well you do. It's how well you follow their rules."
If only the swimmers would do something similar. Take control of their sport.
Why is ONE PERSON controlling an entire sport? Athletes, coaches, judges, college admin, etc. It makes no sense. One man is controlling it ALL.
Back in the day, certain auto race tracks had a "Run what you Brung" division. Maybe it is time for all these athletic groups to do the same: Male/Female/Run what you Brung
