Russia has blundered into a conflict that they must now win! Losing this war would mean losing Crimea and for Russia that is nearly unthinkable. They have put themselves in a situation where they must spend $4B a month in hopes of getting back to where they were in January of 2022, when they held Crimea and were secure. Back then, a poorly armed Ukraine had no hope of attacking Russia in Crimea; today, they have weapons that would attack Crimea daily if need be - and more air weapons are coming.

They had a huge army, and half of it was concentrated right to the west of the Donbass, and exactly on February 14, 2022 they started to shell towns and cities in the Donbass. That is the only reason why Putin, after many warnings, finally recognized the two Donbass republics, which allowed him to help them militarily in line with international law. Even the OSCE, a western org, confirmed the increasing bombing of the Donbass in its daily ceasefire violations reports.
And the important thing about these is that refineries are primarily for internal use. One specific example is the diesel used by farming equipment. Oh and also used by tanks. And its farming season. Will you run your war machine, or your farms?
The question is how much storage does Russia have, and how much can they pull in from other countries. But its ALL going to be so VERY expensive. And there will be shortages. And that's today. Ukraine is not stopping. They are going to keep hitting these day after day with cheap drones and Russia does not have sufficient air defenses anymore to stop them. If they reposition to cover the refineries....well honestly it only takes one or two getting through. They will just surge launch on a random target.
