You know what else? Ayers once breathed out some Carbon Dioxide, that got taken in by a tree, that converted it to oxygen, that Obama then breathed in! Shockawesurpriseoutrageindignation!
Sounds like you are the one who needs to look it up if you are trying to make a point. As it is, Confederate Memorial Day falls on different days in different states (in Texas it is on January 19, not April 26th, and is called Confederate Heroes Day).
But the fact that many of the Southern states have a seperate day to honor the Confederate dead has nothing to do with that the federal holiday now known as Memorial Day and recognized by all 50 states was officially intended to honor all the fallen American servicemen of all wars. And there is no question this has traditionally included Confederates as well.
There are two days in Texas -- Confederate Heroes and Confederate Memorial. The state doesn't officially celebrate April 26 any more, but they do Jan 19. Pick either one.
And Memorial Day was established to honor the Union fallen. It was PCed to include Confederates.
Hey rlchurch, maybe you have heard of the Mexican-American war.If not it was fought in the 1840's between mexico and the us.Stonewall Jackson,Robert E. Lee, and many southerners went to west point and fought in this war. This alone is reason enough to honor these men, lost that one don't you think.Since you must know 1730's virginia moved south thank god
Those who died in that war are honored. The ones who died fighting against the United States of American aren't.
And Memorial Day was established to honor the Union fallen. It was PCed to include Confederates.
complete, utter BS.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.
The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns.

I. We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers sailors and Marines, who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than by cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead? We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security, is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.
Imagine Ayers is still involved with Obama! And still ANTI- AMERICAN! His as* needs to be deported!
I do hope that obama does follow through and gives to our Troops and their families. But that remains to be seen.
Racial controversy for Obama on Memorial Day

But a group of about 60 professors last week sent a petition to the White House asking Obama to avoid a memorial for Confederate military members who died during the war between the North and the South.
Among the professors who signed the letter is 1960s radical William Ayers, a University of Chicago education professor who helped found the radical group the Weather Underground that carried out bombings at the Pentagon and the Capitol. Republicans tried to link Obama with Ayers during the presidential campaign; the two lived in the same neighborhood and served on a charity board together.

Well, I do give you credit for being interested in the subject. However, you are very close but no cigar.
Prior to 1973 Texas recognized both Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis birthday as legal holidays. When LBJ died, the state legislature wanted to make his birthday a state holiday as well. Problem was that, at the time, the numbers were limited by law (that is, how many could be on the books). This was solved by combining Davis' and Lee's birthday's into one official holiday and expanding the scope and intent out to honoring all Confederate soliders. The date picked was January 19 (Lee's birthday) and it was named Confederate Heroes Day.
So far as April 26th goes, while many Southern historical groups within the state traditionally observed -- and still do -- a "Confederate Memorial Day" on April 26 -- it was never a legal holiday as in officially on the books on that particular date.

Sorry, RL, but Memorial Day thus called originally was established by local custom in the Southern states. In the Northern states, it was generally referred to as Decoration Day. Both regions honored their own, but it was not uncommon at all for each to also honor the other. Especially in the South where there were more likely to have been Union soldiers buried than vice-versa.
When what we now know as "Memorial Day" (interesting in itself that the general Southern terminology was used, don't you think?) was made an official federal holiday and adopted by all the states, it was intended to honor all the American fallen in all the wars. And it is admirable and proper.
