Soooo glad Orange County did not approve Butt-ees. They can go do that somewhere else. Not a fan of mega gas stations.
What about good employers for a 150-200 people and a legitimate store along with it? Starting these days around $17-18/hr with full benefits, vacation, and a 401k...

$17-$18 an hour is not some princely sum. Maybe for that type of work it is better than average, but still is not worth incentives or giving them anything special. (Honestly there’s a strong argument even much higher paying jobs shouldn’t but that’s a big debate for another day) If they couldn’t make the deal work within the confines of the rules everyone else has to play by then so be it. Buc-ees should have done better research about the political and economic conditions for their site and come up with a better proposal. Instead they chose not to address concerns that were brought up during the rezoning process. Probably because with so many people stanning for them so hard they figured the board would just give them anything. They are a for profit business.
What's happening now is a land grab so that there will be enough space for EV recharging stations and places where customers can eat, drink, etc while they wait. Even with improvements in EVs, the recharge time will be a lot longer than the ~5 minutes it takes to refill a gas tank.
The hatred of anything new coming to this area is over the top, I really don't get it. Maybe it's because I didn't grow up somewhere stagnant. Roll with it.
Yeah this is a strange area. Big fat "no" to a different concept with jobs that pay good wages for an entry level position. The same people go gaga over an Olive Garden or Red Lobster.

I agree that this type of facility should do great for people charging cars now and in the future. Funny why they wouldn’t commit to 10 EV charging stations, which was one of the conditions Orange County asked for.
I think it was OC significantly scaling down the project (reducing number of pumps, size of building, size of signs etc) and just generally being a PITA that lead Buc-ees to walk way, not the charging stations. That and the NIMBY folks. Typical for the area, wear them down till they throw up their hands and walk away.

Who wants to go on a road trip in a EV and have to sit around and wait for their car to charge?

Well, if you're a merchant, this is an opportunity not a problem.
For the EV owner, yes, this is a drag. But the migration of EVs from 400 volt systems to 800 volts will cut the charge time in half, more or less. It's a complex decision https://chargedevs.com/features/high...ge-more-better but I think the marketplace in the U.S. will eventually drive the manufacturers (pardon the pun) to offer 800V. Europe and Asia, maybe not.
