Actually, I think it's the men who think like this who are the "remarkably superficial creatures". It's a way of justifying either their failure with women, or their own superficial values. Women are happy with a nice guy who's thoughtful of them, stable, and fun to be around.
If you have the money, hire an image consultant for say, two visits just to get you started and take notes of what she says in a notebook. Yes, your image consultant needs to be female. Do you have a feature like startling blue or green eyes? Accentuate it in the form of a nice tie, a shirt or choice of sweater.
The next thing you could do is visit one of the nationwide chain men's clothing stores for some free advice on what to wear and if it's within your budget, purchase a casual, a dressy casual and a dressy outfit from them.
If you're skin's not great, go to a dermatologist for advice. You could see a cosmetic dentist for ideas on how to improve your smile.
Definitely: start exercising if you don't (it'll help physically AND psychologically with your self-image) Eat a healthy diet get plenty of rest, abstain or moderate alcohol and cigarettes.
I would even throw a self-esteem support group in there. You're probably not ugly. You may have an unusual look, that all...and sometimes that is very "in" You may be unconventionally attractive.
Dentist and dermatologist should be the first thing.
Do you have a good job-nice place to live that is clean and presentable in case you get lucky?
What do you find interesting-do you have hobbies,play sports,paint,sail? Do you have a pet?
Wardrobe-there are many blogs that can help you. It is better to have less clothing that is of superior quality vs a bunch of crap wear.

I agree.. I used to be a handsome guy...women used to love me.... the last few yrs... I've not gotten a lot of sleep and I've bloated up from weight.. so women don't notice me anymore...
I know some of it normal aging... but a lot is weight-bloat and lack of sleep..... I look like hell these days............
