Just coming up to noon here and it's 4 C... never seen such a cold day in late October before! Even in mid-winter this would be rare.

^^Wow that is exceptionally cold.

It's been an overcast and showery morning so far here, which is a welcome change.

Here in Buxton we managed a max of 2°C in April with a severe blizzard, powercuts, the lot.

Would love to have seen the un-edited post! You're practically in the arctic circle and at significant elevation, so the fact that your climate is a little cooler than mine is of no great comfort.

Only reached 9.5 C in the end with a low around freezing and 11 mm of rain. More wintry garbage today with a high of 13 C and low of 2 C. Oh well, at least it's sunny... although I don't fancy having to wear sunscreen in such cold conditions.

The next few days should see a return to average temps.

Southerly change here was a fizzer, with little or no precip. MTD sun to 21st is 140.8 hrs, only a little above average, but yesterday and today will increase the margin. It seemed at one point that Saturday's reading was missing, but just a delay transmitting the information over the holiday long weekend. There hasn't been a missed day's sunshine data at this site since 1972.

Faring well rain-wise, compared to the previous two months that is, with around 55mm falling here mtd . Daily maximum temperatures have been quite yo-yoing being either well above or below the average with very few days reaching the actual average.
Invercargill on the other hand, after speaking to my brother, has been doing very well in terms of wet, cold, cloudy and windy westerly weather with some hail showers passing through too and he also said it has been an very unsettled month so far compared to the winter months of July and August.
Just 81 hours of sun mtd ending yesterday and nearly 150mm - mostly in the form of showers with just 2-3 days recording rain though - falling on 21 days with three days measuring falls below below 0.09mm and there has been a consecutive run of "rain" days exceeding 1mm from the 10th.
The current record low October sun total of 112 hours set in 1973 as well as the high "rain" of 175mm in 1946 certainly is looking threatened if this current forecast: Invercargill Weather - NZ Weather Forecast Invercargill from MetService.com rings true - how I wish I were there!

Given the over-reading present in the manual recordings I wouldn't rate the chances of a low sun record as being all that high.

I just had a week down on the West Coast. Every day saw some sort of weather nastiness. Mostly abrupt squalls, but hail on about a dozen occasions, with the ground covered 3 times. Also frequent lightning, with damaging strikes, and a small but quite destructive tornado.

I'm happy to be back with frosty mornings, but settled days.

It could be said to be overdue. There hasn't been a westerly-dominated October (at normal levels) in the SI since 2008, and not a turbulent westerly type one since 2007.
