I would consider Metlakatla to be a friend I have not physically met. I have been enjoying watching her mind work for a few years now. She is intelligent, has a good sense of humor, and compassionate with her neighbors. I do have one regret. Every year, I grow a garden, 80 ft. X 50 ft. Now....as a rule I am omnivorous, but...There is a southern delicacy, an absolutely wonderful food item that requires fresh home grown tomatoes, Dukes Mayonnaise, salt and pepper, and the only time I purchase the last item is when my tomatoes are ripe, a loaf of White Bread. Right now my garden is in the beginning stages, at least one planting of all that I grow is in the ground. The three varieties of tomato that produce the finest Tomato Sandwiches are "Celebrity", "Better Boy", and "Cherokee Purple"!!! I grow really good tomatos, the local farm supply store donated some fertilizer and some tomato plants to the cause. My bank gets a weekly update on the progress of my tomato plants, as do two small grocery stores that want to sell my tomatos. I would truly like to turn Met onto a true southern delicacy. There is no way that I know of, that I could ship Met a few dozen of my tomatos and have them arrive with the same firmness and flavor that the sandwich demands. Bummer!!! Sorry Met!

I think Annie did mention, she was "Green"
Now that would be a site. It is rare to see a moose in my part of Idaho, unless we are in the very deep woods. We just see black bears and elk.
We used to have a herd that hung around in the estate, but the wolves have run them off.

That's pretty reasonable as such.

The biggest problem is that as soon as you state that as your purpose, you are a target. You see, since about 1974 Alaska has become the most hypocritical state in the US. We have a constitution written by an elite group of socialist left wingers (who knew exactly what they were doing, and did it right too). The State was admitted to the Union only because of the purely socialist intent of those who wrote the Alaska Constitution and pushed in Congress for statehood. It was clearly desired, and well understood, that our economy and our government would be more socialist than any other in the US. And it is!

Beginning with statehood, Alaska has held the well known natural resources of the State in common ownership for the people. Initially that was land, fish, and game. Beginning in the 1970's it became oil.

Virtually the entire basis for our government since the discovery of Prudhoe Bay, and because of the Permanent Fund created by Governor Jay Hammond's administration in the 70's it will continue long after Prudhoe Bay is a dry hole, has been the ideology of socialism applied to the oil industry.

You are going to get flamed for what you say here, because half the population of Alaska is made up of hypocrites who came here to reap these socialist benefits, which they clearly do love, while they rant and rave against the very socialism that makes it possible and claim that right wing Nazi policy or out an out Facist ideology would improve their share of the pie.

They can't figure out how the pie came to exist. They can't figure out how they came to own a share. All they can see is how to exclude others so that they can get more.

They are Amercans. Defined by greed.
Floyd, I totally agree with you. (I tried to rep you but it wouldn't let me...)

I remember as a kid during the territorial days, my dad sitting at the table in the cabin having drinks with his trapping friends talking about statehood. He said that if statehood happened, Alaska would become a toilet bowl, reading all the posts here, sounds like he was right.

Yeah, we know your opinion of us; you've made that more than clear.

Just for Met's benefit, I should point out that your dad was wrong, and so are you.

It wasn't Statehood that caused the toilet effect, and it probably would have been far worse if we'd still been a territory.

The problem came when they found all that oil at Prudhoe Bay. Well, actually the problem came when they decided to let Texans drill and pump it.

Just think of what would have happened if we could have passed a law that said nobody could work on the Slope unless they had been an Alaska resident for at least 5 years first... (Overall, a disgusting idea; but for this one purpose it would have made an undescribable difference.)

They could have never even built the pipeline. if that was the case. Boston supplied the majority of Electricians for that job. The wiremen in Alaska didn't even know what an electrician was until that pipleine was built. Local 103 Boston had over 700 members working on that line for many years.

They could never have come close to building that line if they had to use Alaska Residents.!!

I have worked with too many of the 1547 IBEW wiremen; I have only met a small handfull that I would call a wiremen. These people up here are sorely lacking for an education in their trade.

Yes, yes, we know, if you don't live in a tiny cabin in the bush and use an outhouse and kill all your own food and are totally cut off from the world, then you're a piece of crap, therefore creating a toilet. You have to be a minimalist with no electricity hookups or anything, right?

Oh wait. You're on the internet...

Little problem with your analysis there... that was described as "during the territorial days", not as today.

You have to be aware that what was described pretty much fit about 98% of all Alaskans at the time mentioned!

And you also need to know that 20 years after the pipeline started spewing money at Anchorage and the MatSu Valley, most of the people living in bush Alaska (half the population of the state) still did not have flush toilets.
