I don't see this thread as hurtful.

This is a legitimate question. Is gluttony a sin? The bible states gluttony is a sin. Why are we making it controversial . . . ????

I don't think it really matters if you are 200 pounds over weight or 5 pounds over weight, or even under weight. If you are eating more than you should simply to satisfy some carnal desire for sweets or pasta or whatever, then you are committing a lust of the flesh which would make it a sin. Doesn't mean we can't enjoy our food, but moderation moderation moderation is the key.

If you liken it to "getting drunk", it is probably a sin... you can get drunk on more than just alcohol. People get drunk on power. Binge eating can make you drunk on the pleasure of eating. Lusting after another person is similar. But you always pay for it later when you "get drunk".

It is a bit hypocritical when someone focuses on one particular sin (say homosexuality for instance) while ignoring their own lusts (gluttony or whatever).
This is such an aritculate, intelligent, yet compassionate post, I really admire you and what you have written here.

Lego got it right.

Also, gluttony is relative. Like the parable of the rich man. Gluttony is having all the food in the world while "beggars" wait outside hungry.

Gluttony is a sin, however whosoever is without sin, cast the first stone.
Proverbs 23:2
and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.
Proverbs 23:21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
Proverbs 28:7 He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.
We really do not have much of this in the church. We pretty much encourage one another, even though we have alot of social events for the community. Love them like Jesus and pray for them. God will bring them to a point of more of Him and less desire of food or things, the earthly.
