Does this tell us anything we didn't already know ?

That depends upon why our you already know or think you do. It is the latest and serious paper released in the Lancet. I suppose at a minimum it should inform decision (doctors and family) to ventilate a 65 and older person with risk factors listed. But, do not have to read it if uninterested or unimpressed.

It is interesting, in the sense that more research is actually needed as to if the vents are helping or hurting these patients. The chicken or the egg factor has yet to be determined. Surely, those over 65 have a higher chance of becoming critical, even China's whackadoodle statistics couldn't deny that.

But to just decide that all patients over 65 need vents sooner than later, when other hi-flow O2 delivery methods may be more beneficial, is a little premature. I'd like to see more research on the potential of transfusions, due to the question of the RBCs losing the ability to attach oxygen.

If the RBCs can't carry the oxygen, it doesn't matter how much or even how the oxygen is delivered. New, functional RBCs that can carry oxygen will be the only hope. I think that is why the patients transfused are showing such a high rate of recovery.

Ah, life is so much simpler with judicious use of the Ignore feature on heated discussions.

My question wasn't intended as an insult, I apologize if you took it literally. I was asking out of ignorance, to see if I was missing something...

Hello JG - No worries! I did not really mean to be defensive about it either. So, no offence intended either way. Sorry if it came across that way!

PS: Looks like this article in the WP is discussing the findings from the Lancet article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/healt...886_story.html

Think we can finally close the door on the matter of re-infection...?

The following is not really a new scientific development but an exciting direction nonetheless. The article below discusses the plan that New York City subways, buses will test ultraviolet light to attack the virus.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/ultraviole...ry?id=70770382

I have been quite keen to see an application of far-UVC towards making public places safe from sars-cov-2. Far UVC kills this virus (and other viruses and bacteria) in real (as compared to hot air ). If it can be deployed safety and widely (drastically reducing costs is a big part of that), it can make it safe to shop, work in offices, travel in airplanes with other people with far more confidence and, in the process, help us open the economy in reality.

These discussions very often get sidetracked by posters casually equating UV-C (actually in a range - 207-222 nm wavelength) for general UV radiation. I hope that does not happen. Some relevant articles on far-UVC are given below:

Yes. That is a really important finding! Thank you for posting it. Recent MEDCRAM updates discusses this report in some detail as well.

I know Hong Kong does this on mass transportation. Big ol tunnel full of UVC light.
