The investigation is ongoing because they want to find out who else was involved, if anyone. Sorry, I was hurrying to make that post while being distracted.
Here is what the newscaster said:

I'd guess the toddler was bait. Bad guy got lucky in that a lone female stopped instead of a big brute trucker or someone else they wouldn't be interested in.
Disappearances are the worst.
I CCW I probably wouldn't have been one they wanted to stop.
Christina Randall does a good job no matter what case she covers. Her accent is Alabama all the way Yall even though she's from Pensacola. One smart cookie.

The call to 911 from the Red Roof Inn came in about 7ish on Saturday, and she arrived back home at 10:45 the same evening, 3 hours and 45 minutes after the call about family showing up at the Red Roof Inn looking for her.
It wasn't the next day.
Also, there's no evidence or statement that she was walking around barefoot, that I can see.
Until Hoover police, along with Alabama State Police and the FBI who were involved in this case corroborate the family's claim, I don't believe there is an abductor. Law enforcement would have warned the public about it. The police would have also stated there was no toddler on the highway. Or that there was.
For some reason, they have decided not to disclose the reasons behind this incident, or what happened during the 48 hours she was missing.
The Hoover police chief said they are piecing together what her movements were during that time. That doesn't mean they'll let the public know.
This young woman can be as successful as anyone, loved by her family and friends' blah, blah, blah... but underneath she can also be very unstable and a real personality disorder. Lots of crazy people are educated and loved and still nutty. I bet when they scratch the surface, it will all come out.
