A lot of people wear them in FL.... young and old. I won't mow my grass without a baseball cap on in summer, don't want my face burned up. Occasionally wear one out, to show team support but in the winter not so much.

Doesn't have to have anything to do with laziness.

Both. I've seen him wearing a stylish one and a simple baseball cap.

If he didn't care, why wear a hat at all? A desire to cover up his moppy hair displays concern.

And no need to jump to condescension.

He asked me to have lunch today. As usual, he was wearing a hat again. I wanted to ask him why he wears a hat all the time but I didn't want to make him feel uneasy if the reason was because he was balding. How would I find out soon before I get too emotionally involved?

Many guys who live in the South wear baseball caps...everywhere...I think the entire "look" is overdone.

You guys went to lunch, but he wore his hat at the table? Next time ask him, "Would you mind taking your hat off at the (lunch/dinner) table?" If he says yes, he'd mind, ask him in a friendly way, "Is wearing hats a thing with you?"
