Oh I don't know about most people...surely the majority of Americans know that NM is a state and hopefully they know it's in southwestern region.

IMO, the city itself is larger than the metro area would imply....or is that vice versa?

The first part that you said is correct.

The city has 545,852 people while the metro has 887,077 people.
