Hi, everyone. I have never purchased a house before and I am new to the whole process. I have been born and raised in Brooklyn and Queens but now I am looking to purchase a house in Mastic Beach, Long Island.
Can anyone tell me about crime in the area?
Racial makeup?
Whether or not anyone is from there and if they are happy with their purchase?
Any information will be helpful.
I have looked at many houses in the area and I noticed that there are drastic changes in the neighborhood from one area to the next.
Is the neighborhood and community getting better or is it taking a turn for the worse?
Mastic Beach in Long Island is where I am looking at houses.
It's hard to convey tone here - so take this in the nicest way possible - if you know NOTHING about the area, why are you looking at houses there? I am genuinely curious.
Mastic is not a great area by Long Island standards but depending on what parts of Brooklyn or Queens you are comparing it to it can be the same or better. I lived in the Ridgewood area for some time and it is similar. I do have friends that live there so I have been to the area. It is strange in the way one block can be good and the next block can be bad. But then again, Ridgewood was like that as well.

HouseHunter09, you can get a fact sheet with a lot of demographics for Mastic Beach by going here American FactFinder and input Mastic Beach for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and New York for "State", and then click "GO".
For those who may not be familiar with Mastic Beach:
Mastic Beach is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast section of the Town of Brookhaven, in the south-central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Mastic Beach in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Mastic; on the east and south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Shirley.
The Hamlet of Mastic Beach has a different border than does the "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach and a place can have other than a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach): places that have a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach are in the Hamlet of Mastic; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach with a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource
I want to live near the water and I canot afford more than two hundred thousand dollars. That in a nutshell is the bottom line.
