Not that material possessions matter anyway. When I went off to Air Force JROTC boot camp awhile back, I didn't notice the difference between the barebones wirespring bed and the Ethan Allen double I had at home. I still have that bed, I got it when I was in 8th grade (freshman in college now)
You have had the same mattress for five whole years?! Ethan Allen, you say? This is clearly some savvy shopping.
So... the answer is to teach our kids to be selfish little twits who require the brand names? I think the object lesson here is lost on me.
If the family has the means to comfortably buy the brand names, I'm not sure what the lesson is to intentionally make it difficult for the child to get them?
If it's the difference between making a mortgage payment or buying the clothes, then obviously make the payment.
Mmmm, better to teach ones child to be an individual, than to teach them to be a sheep . Kids get picked on wearing name brands or not, nothing you will do changes that fact. The only thing you can do is teach your kids how to handle it when it happens.

This. What is the point in withholding if you can afford it? Might as well indulge your kids every once and while.....
I wear UGGS because I enjoy them. I don't wear UGGS because my friends might wear them.
Yes but you wouldn't even know UGGs existed if they weren't pop culture. A few years back, before they were popular, they were only sold in Australia and Italy. It was only the extreme popularity in those regions that allowed UGG to expand to the North American market.

My boyfriend wore Uggs in the late 80s. They are not new.

Actually, I knew what they were when I went to the store, saw them there, and bought them.
