Oh it's fun! And Sanrene, you are right! The number is lower, it's down to about 9,500 now. I know it's easier to let FOX tell you the facts, it is still possible to look them up.
Without the "civilian" workforce, the union membership is approx 7900, but maybe that was before the layoffs that got the membership so upset. So we basically split the number.

Apparently finding the facts is a little more difficult for some. But if you go to the link, hit your down arrow to page 110, you will see some numbers. Now don't worry, the link goes to a pdf that starts with page 107, so you won't have to hold the down arrow key that long. Also, why would you assume those 400 that called in sick, would not include civilian employees?
I wonder if a union slowdown was responsible for causing the deaths of 94 people in this 1969 snowstorm as well....hmmmm.
Quote:
The nor'easter developed on February 9, and as it moved towards the northeast, intensifying to become a powerful storm, it dropped paralyzing snowfall, often exceeding 20 in (51 cm). New York City bore the brunt of the storm, suffering extensive disruption. Thousands of travelers became stranded on roads and in airports. Overall, at least 94 people lost their lives to the storm. Following the event, the mayor of New York, John Lindsay, was criticized for failing to respond to the snowstorm adequately. Some areas of the city remained uncleared a week after the storm, and schools were closed for several days.
Are the whistle blowers unionized, if so I'm amazed you would believe them....
Well, that really doesn't answer the question does it? Since you brought up the storm 50 years ago, I thought maybe some people had come forward and claimed a slowdown. If not, it's a moot point. Its amazing that unionized whistle blowers are dismissed out of hand too.
Woops, goes to page not found again. Don't know why. I did a Bing search on average sick days taken NYC Sanitation, from the findings about the 4th one down links to a NYPost story of Oct 14th, title "City Workers' load of 'ill'-gotten gains".
