Or ask enough months in advance for the day off. Since the stores were all open last year on Thanksgiving this should not have been a surprise to them.
Good Luck with that.... Nobody is absolutely NOT allowed to take off, call out, or for any reason to be off on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Weekend and during Christmas month of December. They black-out from the calendar months before, and are expected to know that you must work.
As the Target employee are once again petitioning, Target says they have more than enough people ready, willing and able.
The backlash against the big boxes that plan to open on Thanksgiving is free publicy. Who knows, some big boxes may even encourage it.
Big lie. Very few, if any, would volunteer to work on Thanksgiving. I would love to see corporates work on Thanksgiving and Black Friday at their stores.... let's see if they would volunteer doing it
I do feel bad for them though, I wouldn't want to be doing it.
Unfortunately it's true
Part of it is due to lack of labor laws that protect the employees. Companies do not care about their employees, and want to make profit and think about themselves only.
I am being paid relatively well - not great, but above minimum wage - I am being paid based on my skills and education - and I am thankful for each dollar.
Liberals just want to demonize people whom don't support unions.
I will never work for a union (because I choose not to) - and may earn less money - but at least I will earn every penny.
Not disagreeing with you, but, even slaves were grateful when they got some food thrown to them.

From what I have been hearing from various sources, a lot of this black friday walkout hype is stemming from other issues, not working on a holiday itself, this was just an organizing point.
Some large factors go past pay, but the pay in combination with other things;
- Poor store management practices and the impact on employees; the constant uneven application of rules on employees, and the nepotism in more than a few stores, with corporate all but ignoring complaints stemming from these issues.
- The constant switching of schedules, where it makes it impossible for someone to work another part-time job or go to school.
- The lack of constant hours for employees, a person could get thirty one week, eight the next week, all because of an incompetent manager.
- Of course more, but basically poor working conditions create a hostile work force.
These are not company wide issues, but issues they are occurring at many stores, so one employee's experience is different than another's.
Easier than said. Will you provide for me and thousands of other retailers a better job?
BTW the county I live at has blue laws which keep stores closed on Sundays, and on Black Friday mall/store hours in my city are 7 am - 11 pm
However, this concern is for rest of America being forced to work. I'm not selfish, I'm thinking about others!

OK - so you are saying that people who work at WalMart are unhappy. So was I when I worked there, but I moved on to greener pastures and better pay.
I worked for Wally World for five years - they were good to me - at times paying me more than I earned using my technical skills, but I couldn't stay there - it was just not intellectually stimulating or challenging enough for me.
Now I make more money but don't have health insurance - like I did at Wally World - but that is OK - and I would rather pay Obama's fine than be forced into government approved health insurance under ObamaCare.
Nobody is making anyone work for WalMart - they do so because they choose to show up each day.
If they are "hostile" because of poor work conditions - then they should be seeking other employment while working at WalMart - rather than throwing a tantrum and refusing to clock in.
