Why are we so supportive of government involvement in Marijuana, yet so many states want privatization of liquor stores?

Some even call it the birth place of liberalism. Conservative Americans would probably puke if they went there: legalized drugs, legalized prostitution, sex shows everywhere, junkie parks with clean needles, street artists, cradle to grave nanny state government, lenient laws, open borders, gays, transvestites, drag queens..... everything a socially liberal person wants.

Legalized drugs: Again, a good way to reduce the black market. Besides if people are stupid enough to partake in dangerous substances outside of moderation, then that's just the thinning of the herds. Darwinism.

Legalized prostitution: Well... it is the oldest profession in the world. I personally wouldn't buy a hooker, but with it being legal you cut into all of the really bad things like sex slavery, child slavery, pedophillia, and rape.

Sex shows: Why is this a problem? If it's behind closed doors, and people want to watch that, so what? We have pornography in this country. Do you know how many couples will watch from time to time?

Junkie Parks with clean needles: By junkies I assume you're referring to heroin addicts. I say let them provide their own damn needles.

Street artists: Not really seeing a problem here. Please elaborate as to why this is a bad thing?

Cradle to grave nanny laws: I agree here. But nanny laws also consist of telling people what they can and cannot consume, or what they can or cannot do in their bedrooms. Plenty of those here too.

Lenient laws: You mean like actually punishing hardcore criminals such as murderers, rapists, pedophiles, robbers and those who committ other violent crimes?

Gays, tranvestites and drag queens: Don't get me wrong, being straight I'm not going to pretend to understand any of it. However; I'm not going to treat them like second class citizens, persecute them because they're not like me. If you're straight, I highly doubt that the "gay" is going to rub off on you. Oh and BTW we have them here too, especially in the big cities. Sooooooo.... what is your solution?

I didn't say there is a problem, I said it is a liberal city. It's a fact, not necessarily a problem, and even if it was, it would not be my problem. They got what they voted for, and like I said, they are proud of their city, so I don't see a problem. If I don't' like it, I don't have to go there, and if my town ever becomes like that, I could move elsewhere. It is their society, so they get to make the rules. As a matter of fact one of the rules of becoming Dutch is an agreement to accept their diversity, which includes accepting gays and transvestites as a part of the Dutch society.

Even my ultra conservative fundy christian parents, who have always been against it, now favor legalisation.

The tide is turning. The prison-industrial complex will cry like a stuck pig in their fight to maintain the status quo. Hopefully voting constituents win out over lobbyists.

Wouldn't it make more sense to change the sentencing guidelines rather than legalizing drugs?

No. Sentencing guidelines are just guidelines. Harsh sentences fall heavily on minorities. That needs to end.

See now you're making sense. So we agree.

They will fight, and I believe it is a fight they will lose.

They are much more than just guidelines, because they actually mandate a minimum sentence and the judge can't change it even if he/she wanted to. All that could be changed if prison population was the major concern, but I am getting a feeling it is not the main concern.
