Nope. They aren't. Lots of issues there so I've read. But Texas in particular has an absolutely miserable record as far as healthcare goes. Something like 25% have no health insurance and therefore no access to healthcare. And ER IS NOT HEALTHCARE.
Anyway, it'll be interesting how all this plays out with the sheriff. Especially if he signed up for Obamacare/expanded Medicaid. If he did, its over for him politically. He knows that though.
Responsible? No. Ethically or Morally? Yes. There are 1000's upon 1000's who take care of parents financially and physically.
It is not reasonable in United States society to expect children to sacrifice for their parents. This is not Japan and even in Japan, things are changing.

And again it comes down to Ethics and Morals. Your view is to throw your parents/relatives on the ice and mine is not.

You are woefully misinfomred. Texas hospitals care for illegal immigrants and are reimbursed by the federal goverment for that care. You are arrogant to throw out allegations that this former sheriff is seeking public assistance.

Reason: Off topic
I would define idiocy as a middle-aged man carrying an Obamacare policy that features mandatory maternity coverage.
Yeah, but his wife has his Viagra and his prostrate cancer covered for him on her policy.
He's also happy as a clam in the sand, he and his wife are insured for that son, they are about to have with top, professional care. It's his child too. The days of leaving the woman in the woods behind a bush with fingers crossed, to give birth, are over.
I must say that I've seen right wing conservatives use the word "compassion", or lack thereof, more in this thread, than the sum total of all the threads I've viewed over 6 years on this board.
you're offended to pay for someone who doesnt share your beliefs.
How liberal.
My beliefs are about having personal responsibility, something the Sheriff does not have. He is also a hypocrite. I hope he makes a full recovery, and by that, I hope he realizes the error of his ways.
At his age, it's unlikely, but maybe he will regain good health.
Yea, that is not the greatest way of thinking about that. I dont care how healthy you are, it doesnt take much to have the body go hay wire and all of a sudden your on the hospital or you need surgery.
Happened to me, a healthy young 20 something guy who hiked every day and ate healthy only to find a neurological tumor even though my family had no history of tumors or cancer.
But luckily due to the ACA, i had coverage through my parents because my work didn't offer coverage and I had a pre existing condition, which although never caused me to be hospitalized or see the doc, would have disqualified me for individual coverage.
Because of the ACA i can still walk and I am not owing a house mortgage to a hospital.
That's great to hear, there are numerous stories like yours out there, and I hope you made a full recovery. Denying people insurance because of a "pre existing" condition was one of the more onerous and disgraceful aspects of health care in this country before the ACA became available.
