Why would anyone praise them? Republicans are not praising them.

My husband worked at the Toyota factory (in Georgetown Kentucky- they got their parts from....American factories.) Yet, there are some Fords, Chevy's and Lincoln's (probably others) made
almost entirely overseas.

So sometimes, it's just not that simple. Toyota was one of the best employers that he ever had. Great pay, lots of time off, excellent benefits...and they did it all without a Union.

Agreed. At a minimum a majority of the repubs would not make a big deal about the tariffs.
Too much party over policy.

Is there a reason why US car makers would not hike their prices to the level of the imports?

They are punitive tariffs. They are not supposed to be economically driven.

Apparently the intent of these tax-hikes is to score points from his base ahead of the mid-terms. They do not seem to understand THEY will have to pay the tax.

President Donald Trump wants his staff to push forward with plans to slap 25 percent tariffs on foreign cars before the midterm elections in a bid to score points with his political base, according to administration and auto industry officials.

The president believes a promise to tax cars, trucks and auto parts coming from U.S. competitors like Europe and Japan would allow him to present a concrete win to workers, the officials said.

Whats American? My Chevy Silverado was made in Canada. Not anymore American than Chevy. If a Toyota was produced in any state is that American or foreign? Not so easy to say.
