I love this thread! I'm remembering so much ancient knowledge..
I remember when the Angus Barn was the height of food excellence in Raleigh. I was never allowed to go, but I've always wanted to go. In the intervening years, I've probably eaten at some of the best restaurants in San Francisco and New York, but the Angus Barn seems like an unobtainable goal.
Yea! I remember the stories kids would tell about that place. As a kid I thought patrons could pick their own cow...that's how "fancy" it was.
Does anyone remember the name of that pizza place that was directly across the street from that "old" K-mart on Six Forks Rd and Wake Forest Rd. in the 1970's? I think it was the first place I ever had a pizza.
I'm sure that was the Pizza Inn...It is now Courtney's...I never ate there but I believe it's a breakfast and brunch joint.

I was last at Angus Barn this past Summer for a business dinner. Interestingly, it's still going strongly and regarded very highly. The only difference now is that it's no longer "out in the boonies". Raleigh's city limits go beyond its location all the way to the Durham County line.

There used to be a Godfathers Pizza there (boy I feel old!).
Does anyone remember the small (concrete) neighborhood pool right as you exited Downtown Blvd. (heading south) onto Wade Ave or Glenwood Ave towards Cameron Village?
I remember it as a child. There was also a small swim club on Louisburg Road heading into Raleigh. From Spring Forest and Perry Creek Rd all the way to Capital Blvd. used to be completely in the country. I remember that pool (on the right) and the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Church. Also a Biker Bar called "something Crossroads."

Remember the Godfather's that used to be on Avent Ferry Rd? I could tell a very disgusting story about what my HS boyfriend and I saw when we were walking in there to have dinner one night. Yeesh.

The pool just off the overpass on Wade Ave. was the Hayes Barton Pool. It was actually a quite large privately owned pool...but open to the public. I spent many summer days there growing up here.
I believe the pool you describe on Louisburg Road was the second of The Chandler Swim Clubs in Wake County. It was privately owned...membership only. It wold have been near the entrance of Bentley Woods Subdivision. Another Chandler club was on Jones Franklin Road.

Thanks. I would have never guessed that was the much talked-about Hayes Barton Pool.
And yes, now I remember the name "Chandler Swim Club." Thanks!
