So, I took a peek at my gas meter. Thus far, gas bill for 3 weeks should be about $257.00. (This does not include electric). One more week until the meter is read. I think my maximum bill, including electricity, will be about $450.00 (fingers crossed).
That's $300 per month just in winter, or averaged year-round?

Now I don't feel quite so bad. One week ago the oil company filled the oil tank in my basement with heating oil (I have forced hot air which comes from a furnace). The bill: $650. It will just one month, if that. My electric bill is usually about $100 - $140 a month, but during the winter even that bill doubles (more lights used, space heaters, etc.) I'm seriously considering converting to gas.
I've heard recent news reports that gas has jumped up greatly due to demand (your area is not so far from the gas drilling, so maybe the costs aren't as bad). At any rate I'd check into the new cost trend before doing any converting.
We fill our oil tank once a year, currently at about $700-$800. We only use it to supplement, on the coldest days. We get 8 cords of green wood (in the spring) cut split and delivered @ $170/cord. Total cost of heating two-floor 1400 sq ft house with large rooms is currently just over $2000 per year.

Ha ha, no. My total (gas & electric, including taxes) monthly bill averages $150.00.
The $450 is what I predict for a total gas & electric bill THIS month. LAST month was $247.00.
We get 4 loads of 100 gallons of oil per year. We use so little we don't even qualify for a budget plan. Electric is about 150 a month in winter and 120 in summer.
I am looking forward to seeing what it will be like in Jupiter. All the houses have fireplaces.
I have gas lines in the house. When the house was built c.1894 it was illuminated by gaslight. It was not wired for electricity until about 20 years later. You can still see little knobs where "gasoliers" hung from the ceilings and gas wall sconces were. I refuse to have them removed ... I think they are part of the history of the old house. They are not very noticable and have to be pointed out.
My water heater, clothes dryer, and oven/stove are powered by gas. Converting the house from oil heat to gas would not be difficult. My only problem is that with oil heat I have the choice of dozens of providers ... with gas I will be dependent on a single utility (PGW).
Much of my day revolved around books. I spent a long time at Goodreads and rated a number of books that I've read so that it would provide recommendations.
I added a great many titles to my wish list at Amazon but it was a rather quick process and I won't necessarily buy them until I check each one out a bit more thoroughly and see if they are available to borrow from the library first.
I also finally got around to figuring out how to download e-books from the library and it is very easy to do. I do wish they had an easier way to just browse all their e-books but if there is a way I haven't figured it out yet.

If you're talking about Overdrive, there is no easy way. It's a sucky site for browsing. The search function is a massive fail, too.
But it's free books and I can check them out 24/7 while at home in my jammies so I live with it!

The library system I use has a search function to search just ebooks or videos or audio books etc....
Maybe you could recommend this to your library - should be easy to add.
Searching the ebooks at my library is easy and they don't have very many anyway. Overdrive though--yeeeek. I need to get involved with it, get it figured out and use it. Meanwhile I just order library books online and they get them through the system and notify me by email.
