This is just like The American President and HappyTexan is the Richard Dryfuss character--
he doesn't want to get it--

IF the government actually starts taking in 50 BILLION $$ of new tax revenue each and every year, SS and Medicare won't go belly up which will be best news seniors could ever get...
IF the government actually starts taking in 50 BILLION $$ every year, everyone's taxes can go down...
IF the government actually starts taking in 50 BILLION $$ every year, my grandson might have a decent future...

so act like you can separate yourself from the rest of America if it makes you feel better, but you know you can't and thus you just don't want to acknowledge the benefit of Warren's bill...

I get the reason why she is luring the people with the one-time supplement--
I just don't think that there will really be 50BILLION $$ coming to stave off financial boondocks in the future...

Benjamin Franklin summed up the dilemma when he said:

“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."

Elizabeth Warren cares enough to try to level the playing field, to make things fair for all. It's not just about you, not just about me. It's about all of us. The people who have not had all the advantages need to be helped, the sick need health care (everyone needs health care--how can anyone still be against getting health care for all our citizens?)

You. You. You. Penalizing You. The country is about US. All of us. We help each other--I always thought that was the American way. She rewards BAD BEHAVIOR??? By wanting every US citizen to be able to go to the doctor? Has nothing to do with bad behavior. By helping people who are down on their luck? Has nothing to do with bad behavior. Bad things happen to good people and everyone knows that. Thank goodness not everyone in this country is out for themselves only.
There's your answer. Every "successful" person I've ever met expects two things: To not be taxed, or to be taxed at a very low rate, and never give anything to someone in need if it has the slightest possibility of costing them money. They are usually of the flat tax ilk.

We met a neighbor last week (we are relatively new here) and listened to 15 minutes of how successful he was. "Was" being the key word. After hearing for the fourth or fifth time about his phd (zzzzzzz) and how successful all his kids are we got the flat tax speech.

I always chuckle when I hear the flat tax spiel from a "successful" person. Translated it means everyone gets taxed, but I still get to keep my loop holes.

What a load of crap.

In case no one is paying attention the auditing of large companies isn't happening much any more. The amount of time allowed for an audit of large corporations has been severely limited. Limited to the point that auditors do no have sufficient time to find all the monies that they tuck away so it's not taxed.

And if you are a person who decides they don't want to pay taxes then don't. The rate of auditing is dismal and getting worse. The IRS is, and has been over the last few years, being gutted. Everyone has a hissy fit over spending and national debt, but it seems few understand that a large part of the problem is the lack of income from taxes. It is going to get so much worse over the next decade because of the millions that will be put out of work by the coming automation revolution.

Hang on, it's going to be one Hell of a rough ride.

I'm in the not-much-money category. I do have help with my prescriptions through NY EPIC. But everything else I pay for out of my income (at times have to charge because of no cash).
Count me as one person who is not interested in those successful people's money... I do not lust after your money. I can't control what the government decides. If I were in your position, I probably would not like it either.
The one thing that I do have an issue with is what ballplayers, movie/TV stars, etc. earn. Their salaries are obscene. Sports encourages gambling and there are fools out there who don't have money but gamble anyway. I know.... it's their fault that they do this.
But...... those multi-million $$ contracts with the sport and entertainment figures is just plain nuts.

The government will simply spend more, so, no, your taxes will not decrease.

You get 3.9% of your current benefits as a one time COLA.

If your monthly Social Security check is $745, then:

745 * 12 * 3.9% = $348 which is not the same as $580.

How about not paying the COLA?

Yeah. IRS is being gutted by politicians who don't seem to understand that the IRS BRINGS IN MONEY. And because they don't have enough staff, all us citizens are having to pay accountants or buy software to do our taxes because there's not enough help from the IRS to handle questions.

It's not just the sports and movie people. It's the CEOs and other upper-upper management of many of our household name companies. Not to mention the Wall St barons.

Congratulations on not being one of those awful "successful" people.

But I was. So was my wife.

But we don't have those attitudes or hold those beliefs. They don't necessarily go hand in hand.

But you said "every successful person" expects not to be taxed and not to help others in need. By definition that makes you unsuccessful or a hypocrite. Which one is it?
