It is not always just "non-believing times" which cause difficulty for those attempt to lead the lives of nuns or priests. The Catholic Church is most definitely a male institution and women are very much second class participants. Priests can have difficulty when they encounter bureaucracy, greed, politics, hidden homosexuality and child abuse. The Catholic Church has a long, long way to go to clean itself up. Pretty sad for an institution that specializing in telling others how to live.
Reminds me of the movie I didn't get to see in the theaters called "Spotlight" which I am looking forward to seeing when it comes out on DVD. For those who don't know, "it is the true story of a team of reporters from the Boston Globe who delve into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston's religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world."
It's still playing in some theaters. Rated as one of the best pictures of the year. Did anyone on here see it? Did you think it was well done?
Not on subject I know. Just considering if I want to pay the price of two movie tickets to see it in the theater. I always enjoy seeing movies based on true stories, even if they fudge a bit. Saw the recent Steve Jobs movie. Thought it was very poorly done.

I am not an adherent of any organized religion, but I am not hostile to religion per se. I suppose I am hostile to the more fanatical and rigid forms of religion, particularly the ones which reject science out of hand. My biggest quarrel with the Catholic Church is its opposition to birth control, such opposition being a great evil in my opinion. If there's one thing the world has needed more of for the past 60 or 70 years, it's birth control.
As for needing religion to do the "right thing". This is such a fallacy. I firmly believe that atheists have at least as much if not more kindness and generosity in their hearts as do Christians. Look at Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, the greatest philanthropists of all times, trying to help eradicate sickness and disease in the world. Both are declared atheists.
Totally agree. I think we all at least know of self-declared "Christians" who are most "un-Christlike". Some of us are unfortunate enough to personally know people who use their religiosity to mask and excuse really vindictive, vile behavior.

The Church's opposition to birth control probably came back to bite it in the arse because none of the Catholics who dared to use artificial contraceptives ever got struck down by any thunderbolt from God for doing so that it led them and others to question many of the Church's teachings.
The OP wasn't requesting a debate on whether there is a God, or whether there is life after death, although I suppose it was inevitable that the thread would morph into that.
My friend brought up 3 children without god. Every Sunday they'd sit for half an hour and talk about their week, how they could be better and kinder in the following week. She says her kids were home churched. Today her kids are grown. Two scientists and a doctor. This friend is battling cancer and winning. She's asked that no one pray for her. She sees it as voodoo. I send her positive healing thoughts. Hope and love are her religion.

Best movie we went to this year. It balanced the disturbing topic very well, giving you the picture without subjecting the audience to very disturbijg scenes.
Back on topic I've been atheist all my adult life, my wife I would catagorize as agnostic. We too plan on moving to the deep south, a bit of a concern there.
