Never been to Hodads (I know, I know!) but I love the burgers at Boomerang's in Clairemont. They put mix-ins directly into the patty and have a ton of options for toppings, cheese, and sides.

Hodads is opening up downtown at 10th & Broadway. I'll have to try it after they open up.

I read through a few pages and didn't see this one: Fudruckers

I remember when I used to go there, they'd have the beef hanging up by hooks in one of the rooms.

I can tell nobody in this thread ever lived back east.

So are you in love with Steak 'n Shake or White Castle?

White Castle is good, but you can take a Mcdonald's hamburger with only onion and cut it into 4 squares, it's the same thing!

Here's a new candidate. My husband had the Big John Cheeseburger at Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad (6118 Paseo Del Norte). He says it rivals a Nessy Burger!

Either my initial statement was correct or some of you have no taste.

I didn't do a formal count, but I see In n Out winning by a landslide. Anyone who came from back east AND ate burgers at some of the places back east should find In n Out to be absolutely unremarkable compared to what else is out there. In n Out is for (A) California natives or (B) health fanatics who don't like unhealthy burgers. NEWSFLASH: Burgers are supposed to be unhealthy.

Hodads, I'll buy that.
Fuddruckers, I'll buy that.
Islands, I'll buy that.

Other notables (speaking strictly about burgers):

McDonalds' Angus made with double patties (although I made myself sick of them)
McDonalds' Double Quarter Pounder made like a Big Mac (Mac sauce, shredded lettuce)
Fatburger (Make your own, patty is outstanding)
Cheeburger Cheeburger's "Serious" (Made the way you want it)
Whataburger
A&W
Supersonic on Texas Toast

The common thread amongst all of those places: The meat is plentiful, juicy, and tasty. Unlike In N Out where the patty is about as small as McDonalds' cheeseburger at 3-4 times the price and half the taste.
